Tip Leakage Flow Instability in a Centrifugal Compressor

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2019
Abstract In this paper, an unsteady tip leakage flow phenomenon is identified and investigated in a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser at near-stall conditions. This phenomenon is associated with the inception of a rotating instability in the compressor.

Unsteadiness of Tip Leakage Flow in an Axial Compressor

Journal of Fluid Machinery, 2012
Three dimensional unsteady numerical calculations were performed to investigate unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow in an axial compressor. The first stage of the four-stage low-speed research axial compressor was examined. Since this compressor has a relatively large tip clearance, the unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow is induced.

Behaviour of tip-leakage flow in an axial flow compressor rotor

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy, 2007
The current paper reports on investigations with an aim to advance the understanding of the flowfield near the casing of a small-scale high-speed axial flow compressor rotor. Steady three-dimensional viscous flow calculations are applied to obtain flowfields at various operating conditions.

Tip Leakage Flow In a Mixed-flow Pump

The numerical results used to describe the special flow features/characteristics of the mixed-flow pump in this chapter were obtained by employing the computational methodology described in Chapter 3 which includes the pump model, mesh generation, turbulence models and their near wall treatment, and the boundary conditions.

The Tip Leakage Vortex Shed from an Unsteady Tip Clearance Flow

34th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2004
*† ‡ , The interaction between the rotor blade tip leakage flow and inflow disturbances, such as encountered in shrouded marine propulsors, was simulated in the Virginia Tech Linear Cascade Wind Tunnel equipped with a moving endwall system. The idealized periodic inflow unsteadiness was generated using vortex generator pairs upstream of the blade row ...

Tip Leakage Flow on the Transonic Compressor Rotor

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers B, 2003
It is known that tip clearance flows reduce the pressure rise, flow range and efficiency of the turbomachinery. So, the clear understanding about flow fields in the tip region is needed to efficiently design the turbomachinery. The Navier-Stokes code with the proper treatment of the boundary conditions has been developed to analyze the three ...

Broaband Noise Prediction Models And Measurements of Tip Leakage Flows

14th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference (29th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference), 2008
Further experimental analysis of a tip leakage flow and of its associated broadband noise generation is investigated. Based on simultaneous 2 D LDA, unsteady wall pressure and far field measurements, a low frequency domain in the far field spectrum is related to the tip leakage vortex and its interaction with the blade t ip.

Prediction of Tip-Leakage Flow in Axial Flow Compressor With Second Moment Closure

Volume 6: Turbomachinery, Parts A and B, 2006
An innovative analysis based on second-moment closure (SMC), incorporating proper modelling of low-Re-number and wall proximity effects is adopted in conjunction with numerical model based on an in-house parallel finite element code for the prediction of a 3D linear compressor cascade flow with tip clearance.

Aerothermal Investigations of Tip Leakage Flow in Axial Flow Turbines—Part III: TIP Cooling

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2008
Contours of heat transfer coefficient and effectiveness have been measured on the tip of a generic cooled turbine blade, using the transient liquid crystal technique. The experiments were conducted at an exit Reynolds number of 2.3×105 in a five-blade linear cascade with tip clearances of 1.6% and 2.8% chord and featuring engine-representative cooling ...
