A tip leakage flow is well known to have predominant influence on a loss generation in a compressor. An impeller for a transonic centrifugal compressor is generally composed of the main and the splitter blades to gain the choke flow rate.

Measurement and Prediction of Tip Leakage Losses in an Axial-Flow Transonic Turbine [PDF]
This paper presents a simple method for predicting tip leakage losses in transonic axial-flow turbines. The method is based upon experimental work conducted on a flat plate at 5° incidence and with isentropic exit Mach number of 1.26. The tip gap height was varied from zero up to 15% of chord.

Effect of tip winglet position on tip flow and noise of axial flow fan
In order to investigate the impact of blade tip winglet position on the internal flow and noise characteristics of axial flow fans, three different blade tip winglets, namely the TSW blade, the SSW blade, and the PSW blade, were hereby proposed.

Experimental analysis and modeling of the losses in the tip leakage flow of an isolated, non-rotating blade setup [PDF]
Improving pressure rise capabilities of axial compressors requires an in-depth understanding of the losses produced in the tip leakage region. Here, a generic setup that magnifies the tip region of an isolated, non-rotating blade is used with the objectives of describing the main flow components and evaluating the related sources of loss.

Numerical investigation of tip clearance effects on the performance of ducted propeller
Tip clearance loss is a limitation of the improvement of turbomachine performance. Previous studies show the Tip clearance loss is generated by the leakage flow through the tip clearance, and is roughly linearly proportional to the gap size.
