Numerical simulation for the tip leakage vortex cavitation
Ocean Engineering, 2018Abstract The tip leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation is investigated by a commercial Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. A referenced test on a NACA0009 hydrofoil is used to validate the numerical simulation. Considering the local rotation characteristics of the vortical flow, a rotation-curvature corrected Shear-Stress-Transport model (SST-CC

Control of a Turbine Tip Leakage Vortex Using Casing Vortex Generators
47th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including The New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2009An experiment was conducted in a linear cascade of Pak-B blades to simulate the ∞ow in the tip-gap region of a low pressure turbine blade row, and investigate the sensitivity of the ∞ow to casing-mounted passive and active vortex generators. The inlet Reynolds number was 5£10 5 corresponding to an inlet Mach number of 0.2 and an exit Mach number of 0.3.

The Tip Leakage Vortex Shed from an Unsteady Tip Clearance Flow
34th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2004*† ‡ , The interaction between the rotor blade tip leakage flow and inflow disturbances, such as encountered in shrouded marine propulsors, was simulated in the Virginia Tech Linear Cascade Wind Tunnel equipped with a moving endwall system. The idealized periodic inflow unsteadiness was generated using vortex generator pairs upstream of the blade row ...

Control of Tip Leakage Vortex Breakdown by Tip Injection in Unshrouded Turbines
Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2014Tip leakage flow is responsible for a number of aerodynamic losses in turbines, but the leakage loss mechanisms have not been fully elucidated yet. This paper computationally investigates the effects of tip injection on tip leakage vortex dynamics in an unshrouded turbine, in an attempt to seek new loss generation mechanisms in turbine tip clearance ...

Tip Gap Effects on the Unsteady Behavior of a Tip Leakage Vortex
AIAA Journal, 2007The effects of tip gap on the unsteady behavior of a tip leakage vortex downstream of an idealized axial compressor rotor blade have been investigated in a linear cascade wind tunnel, extending the study of Ma and Devenport. The wind tunnel features a moving end wall to simulate the relative motion between the rotor and casing, and vortex generator ...

Enstrophy dissipation of the tip leakage vortex in a multiphase pump
Physics of Fluids, 2022Tip clearance is the distance required between the blade tip and the pump body wall of the impeller in the multiphase pump, of which the resulting tip leakage vortex (TLV) causes unstable flow, leading to energy dissipation. However, only a few studies have been made on the energy dissipation caused by the TLV, and the internal mechanism of energy ...

Vortex Lattice Method Investigation of Tip-Leakage Flow
Journal of TurbomachineryAbstract The use of a vortex lattice method (VLM) is investigated on a tip-leakage flow single-blade configuration (NACA 0012) for a wide range of tip gaps. The aim is to estimate the circulation of the tip-leakage vortex (TLV) detaching from the blade.

Effects of upstream Rankine vortex on tip leakage vortex breakdown in a subsonic turbine
Aerospace Science and Technology, 2020Abstract In this paper, the tip leakage vortex was studied in a subsonic linear turbine cascade that was modeled from a typical high-pressure turbine stage. Due to a large streamwise adverse pressure gradient induced by the strong tip leakage vortex, vortex breakdown was observed and further examined.

Simulation of Rotor Tip Leakage Vortex Broadband Noise using IDDES
19th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference, 2013Broadband noise generated by a fan is studied numerically using a novel variant of the DES the Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES). The IDDES is used together with the Chimera grid overset technique for the independent griding of the rotor, stator and channel and a highly parallel sliding mesh interface suitable for huge simulations.
