PIV Measurements of a Tip Leakage Vortex
SNAME 26th American Towing Tank Conference, 2001The tip-leakage vortex occurring on a ducted rotor was examined using both three component Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and planar Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV). The vortex strength and core size were examined for different vortex cross sections downstream of the blade trailing edge. The variability of these quantities are observed with PIV and

Vortex suppression of the tip leakage flow over a NACA0009 hydrofoil via a passive jet induced by the double-control-hole [PDF]
Tip leakage vortex (TLV) frequently occurring in bladed energy conversion machines may induce flow loss as well as cavitation. The double-curved-hole (DC hole) structures located at the 10%–25% chord near the leading edge of the foil are adopted to ...

Tip Gap Effects on the Unsteady Behavior of a Tip Leakage Vortex
AIAA Journal, 2007The effects of tip gap on the unsteady behavior of a tip leakage vortex downstream of an idealized axial compressor rotor blade have been investigated in a linear cascade wind tunnel, extending the study of Ma and Devenport. The wind tunnel features a moving end wall to simulate the relative motion between the rotor and casing, and vortex generator ...

Control of a Turbine Tip Leakage Vortex Using Casing Vortex Generators
47th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including The New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2009An experiment was conducted in a linear cascade of Pak-B blades to simulate the ∞ow in the tip-gap region of a low pressure turbine blade row, and investigate the sensitivity of the ∞ow to casing-mounted passive and active vortex generators. The inlet Reynolds number was 5£10 5 corresponding to an inlet Mach number of 0.2 and an exit Mach number of 0.3.

Suppressing tip-leakage vortex cavitation by overhanging grooves
Experiments in Fluids, 2020In the present paper, a new control method for tip-leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation is proposed. This method, which combines the effects of grooves and winglets, is made of overhanging grooves (OHGs) fitted at the tip of a hydrofoil. Experimental and numerical investigations are conducted to evaluate the performances of OHGs in terms of TLV cavitation ...

The Tip Leakage Vortex Shed from an Unsteady Tip Clearance Flow
34th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2004*† ‡ , The interaction between the rotor blade tip leakage flow and inflow disturbances, such as encountered in shrouded marine propulsors, was simulated in the Virginia Tech Linear Cascade Wind Tunnel equipped with a moving endwall system. The idealized periodic inflow unsteadiness was generated using vortex generator pairs upstream of the blade row ...

Control of Tip Leakage Vortex Breakdown by Tip Injection in Unshrouded Turbines
Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2014Tip leakage flow is responsible for a number of aerodynamic losses in turbines, but the leakage loss mechanisms have not been fully elucidated yet. This paper computationally investigates the effects of tip injection on tip leakage vortex dynamics in an unshrouded turbine, in an attempt to seek new loss generation mechanisms in turbine tip clearance ...

Evolution of the Tip Leakage Vortex in an Axial Compressor Rotor
Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2004, Parts A and B, 2004The evolution of tip leakage vortex is analyzed at both design and near stall conditions based on instantaneous and averaged velocity and vorticity distributions in cross flow sections measured with Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) in a large-scale low-speed compressor facility. Formation, becoming unstable, and interaction of small-scale

Vortex and cavity dynamics for the tip-leakage cavitation over a hydrofoil
Physics of Fluids, 2022Large eddy simulations were used to investigate unsteady tip-leakage cavitating flow over a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 0009 hydrofoil. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was combined with fast Fourier transforms to help better understand the deformation dynamics of the vortex and cavity.
