Effects of upstream Rankine vortex on tip leakage vortex breakdown in a subsonic turbine

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2020
Abstract In this paper, the tip leakage vortex was studied in a subsonic linear turbine cascade that was modeled from a typical high-pressure turbine stage. Due to a large streamwise adverse pressure gradient induced by the strong tip leakage vortex, vortex breakdown was observed and further examined.

Interaction mechanism between incoming vortex and tip leakage vortex breakdown of a compressor cascade

Physics of Fluids, 2023
Tip leakage vortex breakdown (TVB) is an important flow character that affects the performance of axial compressors. In this study, the interaction mechanism between incoming vortex (IV) and TVB is investigated to improve the performance of compressor cascade.

Numerical Study of Tip Leakage Vortex Around a NACA0009 Hydrofoil

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 2021
Abstract In the tip clearance flow, the dominant vortex is the tip leakage vortex (TLV), which has a significant impact on the hydraulic and cavitation performance of axial flow machineries. In order to reveal the impact mechanism of the gap size on the TLV, gap flows with two gap sizes, i.e., τ=0.2 (2 mm) and τ=1.0 (10 mm), are ...

Tip Leakage and Backflow Vortex Cavitation

2007
In addition to blade surface cavitation, tip leakage and backflow cavitations occur in real inducers. Although most of cavitation instabilities can be explained by considering only blade surface cavitation, these types of cavitation might play an important role especially for the suppression of instabilities.

Characteristics of the Tip Leakage Vortex in a Low-Speed Axial Compressor

AIAA Journal, 2007
The flowfields in the tip region of the rotor passage are investigated from a large-scale low-speed axial compressor test at both the design and near-stall conditions by using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. The characteristics of the tip leakage vortex (TLV) are analyzed based on the variations of its trajectory, concentration, size ...

Numerical Analysis of a Tip Leakage Vortex in an Axial Flow Fan

Journal of Fluid Machinery, 2004
Three-dimensional vortical flow and separated flow topology near the casing wall in an axial flow fan having two different tip clearances have been investigated by a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. The simulation shows that the tip leakage vortex formed close to the leading edge of the blade tip on suction side grows in the ...

An Unstructured RANS Study of Tip-Leakage Vortex Cavitation Inception

Volume 1: Fora, Parts A, B, C, and D, 2003
To study the physics of cavitation inception, a ducted propulsor simulation is developed and extensively validated with experimental results. The numerical method is shown to be in good agreement with experimental measurements made in the vortex. The simulation is used as a tool for investigating the minimum pressure, circulation, and axial/tangential ...

unsteadyperiodicvorticalinflow representativeof anarrayofstator necklace vortices.Thedownstream tip-leakage vortex is disturbed periodically by the vortical inflow shed by those vortex generators. Phase-averaged two-point correlations are measured near the trailing edge of the cascade. The measurement results clearly show that organized, intense, large-

The Behavior of the Casing Boundary Layer With the Presence of Tip Leakage Vortex

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2018
Casing boundary layer effectively places a limit on the pressure rise capability achievable by the compressor. The separation of the casing boundary layer not only produce flow loss but also closely related to the compressor rotating stall. The motivation of this paper is to present a viewpoint that the casing boundary layer should be paid attention to

Unsteady effects of vortex interaction on tip leakage vortex breakdown and its loss mechanism

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2018
Abstract In an unshrouded high-pressure turbine, tip leakage flow causes a loss of efficiency. The loss mechanisms of tip leakage flow were investigated mostly with steady uniform incoming conditions in previous studies. This paper investigated the unsteady aerodynamic performance of the tip leakage flow in a turbine stage by solving Unsteady ...
