Scaling of Tip Vortex Cavitation Inception
SNAME 22nd American Towing Tank Conference, 1989A practical method for predicting tip vortex cavitation inception of marine propellers is described. Cavitation of tip vortex first occurs when the local pressure inside the vortex reduces to the vapor pressure of the fluid. The minimum pressure in the vortex is reached at the radius of the viscous core.

Suppressing tip vortex cavitation by winglets
Experiments in Fluids, 2019Despite the numerous remedies prescribed so far, tip vortex cavitation (TVC) remains a major issue in design and operation of diverse applications. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the effectiveness of winglets in suppressing TVC. An elliptical hydrofoil is selected as the baseline geometry and various winglets are realized by bending the ...

Rans Computations of a Cavitating Tip Vortex
2015The Swiss national research project Hydronet 2 gathers a consortium of industrial and academic partners supported by the Competence Center of Energy and Mobility (CCEM) and Swiss Electric Research (SER) in order to improve the hydropower plants. One of the research topic focuses on the cavitating tip vortex.

Nucleation and cavitation number effects on tip vortex cavitation dynamics and noise
Experiments in Fluids, 2021The spatial and acoustic characteristics of tip vortex cavitation (TVC) inception were measured in a cavitation tunnel. Numerous cavitation events were recorded to reveal the influence of different nuclei populations and cavitation numbers on nuclei capture and activation physics, and the role of the streamwise pressure distribution in a vortex ...

Tip Clearance and Tip Vortex Cavitation in an Axial Flow Pump
Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1997A combined study of tip clearance and tip vortex cavitations in a pump-type rotating machine is presented. Cavitation patterns are observed and cavitation inception is determined for various gap heights, clearance and blade geometries, and rotor operating conditions.

Tip vortex cavitation control by the micro vortex generator
Physics of FluidsThe present study investigates the control effect of a vane-shaped micro vortex generator (VG) on the inception and development of tip vortex cavitation. Five different arrangements were tested by varying the position and installation angle near the tip of a NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) 662-415 hydrofoil.

Tip Leakage Vortex Cavitation from the Tip Clearance of a Single Hydrofoil
Abstract Focusing on the tip leakage vortex cavitation, experimental and numerical studies were carried out as the first step of the investigation of cavitations in tip leakage flow. For a single hydrofoil with a tip clearance, tip leakage vortex cavitations were observed for various cavitation numbers and angles of attack.

Numerical simulation for the tip leakage vortex cavitation
Ocean Engineering, 2018Abstract The tip leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation is investigated by a commercial Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. A referenced test on a NACA0009 hydrofoil is used to validate the numerical simulation. Considering the local rotation characteristics of the vortical flow, a rotation-curvature corrected Shear-Stress-Transport model (SST-CC

Tip-Vortex Induced Cavitation on a Ducted Propulsor
Volume 1: Fora, Parts A, B, C, and D, 2003An extensive experimental investigation was carried out to examine tip-vortex induced cavitation on a ducted propulsor. The flowfield about a 3-bladed, ducted rotor operating in uniform inflow was measured in detail with three-dimensional LDV; cavitation inception was measured; and a correlated hydrophone/high-speed video system was used to identify ...
