Dynamics of cavitating tip vortex

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2023
The three-dimensional dynamic behaviour of a tip vortex generated by a NACA $66_2$ -415 hydrofoil is investigated under wetted flow and cavitating conditions using time-resolved tomographic particle image velocimetry. Two main cavitation modes are studied, namely the breathing and double-helical modes.

Study of tip vortex cavitation inception and vortex singing

Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2019
Tip vortex cavitation (TVC) is an important cavitation phenomenon in marine propeller. The formation and evolution of tip vortex cavitation are hot topics consistently both in engineering application and mechanism research. In this paper some recent studies on tip vortex cavitation inception and the noise of tip vortex cavitation evolution are ...

RANS Predictions of a Cavitating Tip Vortex

Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Cavitation, 2012
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Aalto University have been investigating the numerical simulation of cavitating propellers. Special emphasis is placed on having a reasonable grid resolution in the tip vortex and at the blade wake locations in the slipstream. The calculations are performed with a uniform inflow.

Impact of skew on propeller tip vortex cavitation

Ocean Engineering, 2021
Abstract To analyze the effect of skew on propeller cavitation performance, single-blade propellers with different amounts of skew are investigated. Simulations are preformed using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation model. The computational domain is meshed by cutting cells.

Tip Vortex Formation and Cavitation

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1997
This paper summarizes recent research on the relation between boundary layer flow, tip vortex structure for a finite span wing, and cavitation. Three hydrofoils of elliptic planform of aspect ratio 3 were constructed with different NACA cross sections.

Numerical Study on Tip Vortex Cavitation Inception on a Foil [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Sciences (Switzerland), 2021
In this paper, the inception of tip vortex cavitation in weak water has been predicted using a numerical simulation, and a new scaling concept with variable exponent has also been suggested for cavitation inception index. The numerical simulations of the cavitating flows over an elliptic planform hydrofoil were performed by using the RANS approach with

Some observations of tip-vortex cavitation

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1991
Cavitation has been observed in the trailing vortex system of an elliptic planform hydrofoil. A complex dependence on Reynolds number and gas content is noted at inception. Some of the observations can be related to tension effects associated with the lack of sufficiently large-sized nuclei.

Characteristics of Tip Vortex Cavitation Noise

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1989
Tip vortex cavitation noise was experimentally investigated utilizing hydrofoils with an elliptic planform. The noise was monitored by an array of hydrophones. A variety of cavitating conditions were studied, including inception, fully developed vortex cavitation, and surface cavitation.
