Integrated tire wear buildup and rainfall-runoff model to simulate tire wear particles in stormwater

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Management, 2023
This paper presents an approach to integrate tire wear buildup and rainfall-runoff models to simulate tire wear buildup on road surfaces and its subsequent transport in stormwater runoff events. To do so, a buildup model is presented based on vehicle kilometers traveled, vehicle type, vehicle speed, and road roughness within a watershed.

Characteristics of Tire Wear Particles Generated by a Tire Simulator under Various Driving Conditions

open access: yesEnvironmental Science & Technology, 2018
Physicochemical properties of pure tire wear particles (TWPs) were investigated in a laboratory. A tire simulator installed in an enclosing chamber was employed to eliminate artifacts caused by interfering particles during the generation and measurement of TWPs. TWP particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) was correlated with tire speed ( r > 0.94) and load

Tire-Wear Particles as a Source of Zinc to the Environment

open access: yesEnvironmental Science & Technology, 2004
Tire-tread material has a zinc (Zn) content of about 1 wt %. The quantity of tread material lost to road surfaces by abrasion has not been well characterized. Two approaches were used to assess the magnitude of this nonpoint source of Zn in the U.S. for the period 1936-1999.

Estimation of emission of tire wear particles (TWPs) in Korea

Waste Management, 2020
Tire wear particles (TWPs) were one of the source categories of microplastics, and some countries consider it the largest. In the case of Korea, the number of vehicles per a kilometer of road is the highest among 30 OECD countries. Therefore, the concentration of TWPs is considered high.

Review: Mitigation measures to reduce tire and road wear particles

open access: yesScience of The Total Environment, 2023
The generation of tire wear is an inevitable outcome of the friction between the road and the tire which is necessary for the safe operation of vehicles on roadways. Tire wear particles form agglomerates with road surface material. These agglomerates are called tire and road wear particles (TRWP).

Urban runoff mortality syndrome in zooplankton caused by tire wear particles

Environmental Pollution, 2023
Stormwater runoff from roadways is a global threat to water quality, aquatic organisms, and ecosystems. Tire tread wear particles (TWP) from roadway runoff may lead to urban runoff mortality syndrome (URMS) in some aquatic organisms. We tested the hypothesis that urban runoff from roadways can kill zooplankton. Both roadway runoff and TWP leachate were

Microplastics and Tire Wear Particles in Urban Stormwater: Abundance, Characteristics, and Potential Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesEnvironmental Science & Technology, 2023
Stormwater has been identified as a pathway for microplastics (MPs), including tire wear particles (TWPs), into aquatic habitats. Our knowledge of the abundance of MPs in urban stormwater and potential strategies to control MPs in stormwater is still ...

Chemical characteristics of fine tire wear particles generated on a tire simulator

Environmental Pollution, 2023
Tire wear is one of the major sources of traffic-related particle emissions, however, laboratory data on the components of tire wear particles (TWPs) is scarce. In this study, ten brands of tires, including two types and four-speed grades, were chosen for wear tests using a tire simulator in a closed chamber.

Toxicity of Tire Wear Particles and the Leachates to Microorganisms in Marine Sediments

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2022
Tire wear particles (TWPs), which are among the microplastic pollutants in the environment, can inevitably accumulate in coastal sediments. The present study comprehensively investigated the effect of pristine TWPs on bacterial community structure in coastal sediments and compared the effect of pristine TWPs and aged TWPs on nine strains of bacteria in
