Titanium Aluminides - An Overview

MRS Proceedings, 1984
The object of this paper is to describe a coordinated research and development program which has been pursued by an Air Force-Industry-University team for more than twelve years. The focus of our attention has been on the development, processing, and engine testing of alloys based on intermetallic compounds, specifically on the aluminides of titanium ...

Titanium Aluminide Intermetallics

2012
Abstract Titanium aluminides are lightweight materials that have relatively high melting points and good high-temperature strength. They also tend to be stronger and lighter than conventional titanium alloys, but considerably less ductile.

Reaction synthesis of titanium aluminides

Journal of Materials Science, 2001
The formation of titanium aluminides from the elemental powders has been investigated. A traditional powder metallurgy route of compaction (by cold isostatic pressing, hot pressing or hot extrusion) followed by heat treatment was compared with the novel technique of hot extrusion reaction synthesis (HERS).

Thermomechanical fatigue of titanium aluminides

International Journal of Fatigue, 2013
Abstract This paper reviews the thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) studies performed on various titanium aluminide (TiAl) alloys during the last decade in the research group of one of the authors (H.-J. Christ). The investigated alloys are Ti–47Al–2Mn–2Nb (XD), Ti–46Al–4(Cr, Nb, Ta, B) (γ-MET), Ti–45Al–5Nb–0.2C–0.2B (TNB-V5) and Ti–45Al–8Nb–0.2C (TNB-V2).

Quo vadis gamma titanium aluminide

Intermetallics, 2001
Abstract A perspective is offered on the implementation of γ-TiAl for various components in aircraft engines, aerospace vehicles and automotive engines. The key to acceptance within the next 5 years is a manufacturing route that balances cost and benefit.

Laser Processing of Titanium Aluminides

Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, 2000
Using a Nd-YAG laser, laser processing of a series of Ti-Al alloys including pure Ti and Ti-Al intermetallic compounds has been studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and optical microscopy were used to determine the surface morphological, chemical, and compositional characteristics of the laser-processed ...

Transport properties of titanium aluminides

Materials Science and Engineering: B, 1995
Abstract Low temperature resistivity studies are conducted on four single-phase Ti3Al alloys including the stoichiometric compound (25 at.% Al) in the temperature range 100–300 K using the standard four-probe measurement technique. A systematic order-dependent resistivity variation with temperature has been observed as the alloy composition deviated ...

Toughening mechanisms in titanium aluminides

Metallurgical Transactions A, 1993
The relevant toughening mechanisms in two-phase titanium aluminides are reviewed in order to elucidate microstructure/fracture toughness relationships. Both intrinsic and extrinsic toughening mechanisms are present in Ti3Al- and TiAl-base alloys. The former affects the initiation toughness(i.e., KIC value) at the onset of crack extension, while the ...

Joining of Gamma Titanium Aluminides

2002
Abstract : This report summarizes, interprets and comparatively discusses the results of research and development performed on the joining of gamma titanium aluminides during the past two decades. Although organized and presented by joining process, many of the observations made and relationships developed, particularly those regarding the weldability ...
