Porous Titanium Implants: A Review

Advanced Engineering Materials, 2018
Titanium and its alloys are commonly used in almost all disciplines of medicine because of their sufficient biocompatibility and meeting of mechanical requirements. However, dense metallic biomaterials represent only an interfacial connection with host tissue, may develop stress shielding which causes ingrowth of the fibrous tissue, and are prone to ...

Titanium release in peri‐implantitis

Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, 2018
SummaryObjectivesThe aim of this study was to investigate the titanium (Ti) content of biopsies from patients with severe peri‐implantitis or controls without Ti exposure.BackgroundPeri‐implantitis is considered to be an infectious disease, but recent studies have shown that Ti can aggravate inflammation in combination with bacterial products.

Surface analysis of titanium implants

Biomaterials, 1993
Medical grade titanium samples were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after immersion in various proteins. Additionally, an implant removed from a patient following clinical failure was examined using scanning ion and electron microscopy.

Microbiologic Diagnostics at Titanium Implants

Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, 2003
ABSTRACT Background: The microbiota found at periimplant lesions have been shown to contain putative periodontal pathogens as well as opportunistic species such as Staphylococcus spp, enterics, and Candida spp. Therefore, a microbiologic diagnosis may be of value as guidance before treatment of such lesions.

Histomorphometric Comparison of Transmandibular Implant and Titanium Implant

Journal of Long-Term Effects of Medical Implants, 2016
This study was a histomorphometric comparison of the transmandibular implant (TMI) system and titanium implant using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). Two dogs were used. In each dog, 16 implant holes were made in the bilateral mandibular angle.

Hydroxyapatite-coating on titanium arc sprayed titanium implants

Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, 1997
We developed a new titanium spray technique using an inert gas shielded arc spray (titanium arc spray). Hydroxyapatite (HA)-coating can be applied to the implant without any surface pore obstruction after the rough surface is made by this technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of various porous implant surfaces after HA-coating revealed that the

Surface modification of titanium and titanium alloys by ion implantation

Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials, 2010
AbstractTitanium and titanium alloys are widely used in biomedical devices and components, especially as hard tissue replacements as well as in cardiac and cardiovascular applications, because of their desirable properties, such as relatively low modulus, good fatigue strength, formability, machinability, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility ...

Porous titanium dental implants

Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, 1974
AbstractTitanium implants have been designed which utilize a solid core and porous exterior. The technique for implants containing posts utilizes a cast chromium‐cobalt splint for fixation and the buried implants are held in place by the overlying gingiva until tissue growth into the porosity results in stabilization.Clinically successful post implants
