Titanium Matrix Composites

2003
Titanium matrix composites (TMCs) consist of a titanium matrix containing continuous reinforcing fibers. Development of these materials began more than 20 years ago when the primary reinforcing fiber being considered was boron. Since then, TMCs have evolved and have been improved with the availability of SiC fibers.

Developments in Titanium Metal Matrix Composites

JOM, 1984
A review is given of developments in the titanium metal matrix composites (MMC) area over the past two decades. Particular topics of discussion include: fibers, matrices, fabrication techniques, mechanical properties of both the fiber and composite, and fractography. It is demonstrated that the increased metallurgical understanding of the composite has

3M TITANIUM MATRIX COMPOSITES

Alloy Digest, 1997
Abstract 3M TITANIUM MATRIX COMPOSITES are produced by electron-beam evaporation to apply Ti-6Al-4V coating to high-strength, high-modulus silicon carbon fibers. The resulting composite has increased strength and stiffness over monolithic titanium/titanium alloy parts.

Casting and Modeling of Titanium Matrix Composites

Key Engineering Materials, 2007
The aim of this study is to establish the net-shape forming of titanium matrix composites (TMCs) shot sleeve for Al alloys die-casting using a casting route. In-situ synthesis and casting of TMCs were carried out in a vacuum induction melting furnace. The synthesized (TiC+TiB) TMCs were examined using an scanning electron microscopy and electron probe ...

Titanium metal matrix composites: An overview

Composites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing, 2019
Abstract Titanium matrix composites (TMCs) offer high specific strength and stiffness compared with steel and nickel-base materials. High-temperature TMCs can offer up to 50% weight reduction relative to monolithic superalloys while maintaining equivalent strength and stiffness in jet engine propulsion systems.

Interfacial reactions in titanium-matrix composites

JOM, 1989
A study of the interfacial reaction characteristics of SiC fiber-reinforced titanium aluminide and disordered titanium alloy composites has determined that the matrix alloy compositions affect the microstructure and the distribution of the reaction products, as well as the growth kinetics of the reaction zones.

Investment Casting of Titanium Matrix Composites

Materials Science Forum, 2005
The aim of the present work is to investigate the possibility of in-situ synthesis and net-shape of the titanium matrix composites (TMCs) using a casting route. From the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermodynamic calculations, the spherical TiC and needle like TiB reinforced ...

Optimizing the consolidation of titanium matrix composites

Acta Materialia, 1997
Abstract The high temperature consolidation of fiber reinforced metal matrix composite preforms seeks to eliminate matrix porosity (i.e. to increase the relative density) while simultaneously minimizing fiber microbending/fracture and the growth of reaction products at the fiber-matrix interface.

Interfacial reactions in titanium matrix composites

Journal of Materials Science Letters, 1991
This letter presents some results of a study undertaken to determine the processing conditions necessary to produce acceptable composite microstructures using a variety of fibres and alloys, and to characterize the development of the interfacial reaction ...
