Novel components of Tityus serrulatus venom: A transcriptomic approach

Toxicon, 2021
Several research groups have studied the components produced by the venom gland of the scorpion Tityus serrulatus, which has one of the most lethal venoms in the world. Various methodologies have been employed to clarify the complex mechanisms of action of these components, especially neurotoxins and enzymes.

Tityus serrulatus venom – A lethal cocktail

Toxicon, 2015
Tityus serrulatus (Ts) is the main scorpion species of medical importance in Brazil. Ts venom is composed of several compounds such as mucus, inorganic salts, lipids, amines, nucleotides, enzymes, kallikrein inhibitor, natriuretic peptide, proteins with high molecular mass, peptides, free amino acids and neurotoxins. Neurotoxins are considered the most

Tityus serrulatus Scorpion Venom and Toxins: An Overview

Protein & Peptide Letters, 2009
Tityus serrulatus is considered the most dangerous scorpion in South America and responsible for most of the fatal cases. This review will focus on Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom (Tsv), its long-chain Na(+)-channel toxins (NaTx), which include alpha- and beta-neurotoxins, short-chain K(+)-channel toxins (KTx), hyaluronidase, proteases and other ...

Myocardial necrosis after envenomation by the scorpion Tityus serrulatus

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2002
A 4 years old boy died a few hours after he had been stung by a scorpion (Tityus serrulatus). At necropsy, there were multiple foci of coagulative myocytolysis in the myocardium and pulmonary oedema. Myocardial necrosis was probably associated with the sympathetic storm induced by scorpion envenomation, and may have contributed to cardiac failure and ...

Enzymes with gelatinolytic activity can be found in Tityus bahiensis and Tityus serrulatus venoms

Toxicon, 2002
Enzymes with gelatinolytic activity were detected in Tityus bahiensis and Tityus serrulatus venom. Their activity was optimal at pH 8.0 in SDS-PAGE-gelatin. They were inhibited by PMSF but not by iodoacetamide, pepstatin or phenantrolin in the assay conditions used. This suggests that these enzymes are serine proteases.

Venom variability among several Tityus serrulatus specimens

Toxicon, 1997
Individual differences in venom composition among several Tityus serrulatus specimens collected in the same area were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Polyclonal antibodies raised against whole venom and against the alpha-type (toxin IV-5 or Ts IV) and the beta-type toxin (toxin gamma or Ts VII) were used to study specific ...
