Advanced systems for intraoperative cartilage evaluation and treatment demonstrate early feasibility and a shift towards integrating artificial intelligence: A scoping review

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To review the current literature evaluating AI and advanced technologies for intraoperative cartilage management. Methods A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus was conducted in March 2026 according to PRISMA guidelines.

Sagittal femoral morphology is not associated with robotic planning or soft‐tissue balance during robotic‐assisted total knee arthroplasty: An analysis from the Brescia Knee Research Group

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To evaluate the influence of sagittal femoral morphology on robotic planning parameters and intraoperative soft‐tissue balance in robotic‐assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA). It was hypothesised that sagittal femoral morphology has limited impact on intraoperative planning and laxity.

Coronal alignment behaviour across the knee range of motion is associated with constitutional alignment and soft‐tissue balance: The REAL HKA classification

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To evaluate intraoperative, pre‐resection coronal alignment throughout the range of motion (ROM) in knees undergoing robotic‐assisted total knee arthroplasty (ra‐TKA), and to assess its relationship with the Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee (CPAK) and the Robotic Evaluation of Articular Laxity (REAL) classifications.

Improved clinical outcomes when maintaining a neutral joint line obliquity at high tibial osteotomy and subsequent total knee arthroplasty

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose The primary aim was to study the impact of joint line obliquity (JLO) on clinical outcomes and survivorship in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) after a previous high tibial osteotomy (HTO).

Body Mass Index Modifies the Effect of Hemovac Drainage on Blood Loss After Total Knee Arthroplasty. [PDF]

open access: yesOrthop Surg
In tranexamic acid–treated primary total knee arthroplasty, estimated blood loss increased with rising BMI when no drain was used but remained stable across the BMI range with Hemovac drainage. These findings support a BMI‐based, selective use of drains rather than routine placement.

Femoral component internal rotation in functionally aligned robotic‐assisted total knee arthroplasty does not impair functional outcomes

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Femoral component internal rotation tightens the medial flexion gap and medialises femoral trochlea position, thus influencing patellofemoral tracking and function. Therefore, one of the tenets of mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been to avoid femoral component internal rotation relative to the transepicondylar ...

Patients with obesity have a higher risk of periprosthetic joint infection and more frequent polymicrobial infections after knee arthroplasty: A nationwide register‐based study from Denmark

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To compare the 2‐year incidence of (1) revision due to periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and (2) all‐cause revision after primary knee arthroplasty (KA) in patients with/without obesity and to compare the microbial profiles in early (≤ 90 days) and late (91–730 days) PJI.

Previous bariatric surgery was not associated with an increased risk of reintervention within 2 years after knee arthroplasty: A nationwide register‐based study from Denmark

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Obesity is a major risk factor for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Bariatric surgery (BAS) effectively induces weight loss, but some of these patients subsequently require knee arthroplasty (KA) despite substantial weight reduction. However, the impact of prior BAS on the risk of reintervention, antibiotic use and mortality following KA ...

Sport participation after isolated distal femoral osteotomy in young patients: High return‐to‐sport rates and predictive role of preoperative activity level

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose The present study aimed to assess return to sport (RTS) rate, activity level and return to work (RTW) in young, physically active patients who underwent isolated distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) for lateral knee pain and valgus malalignment.
