Stratospheric Temperature Adjustment Robustly Damps the State Dependence of CO2 Radiative Forcing

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract The equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) depends on background climate state, a phenomenon known as state dependence. Recent studies highlighted state‐dependent CO2 radiative forcing as a mechanism for ECS state dependence, largely attributing it to enhanced instantaneous forcing (FINS) at higher CO2.

Targeting Human Immunodeficiency Virus Integrase Beyond the Active Site: The Discovery and Development of Allosteric Integrase Inhibitors

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 16, 27 August 2026.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) allosteric integrase inhibitors (ALLINIs) offer a vital alternative to standard therapies by targeting noncatalytic sites. By inducing aberrant integrase multimerization, they disrupt viral maturation. This review explores their medicinal chemistry evolution, detailing structural insights, structure–activity ...

Improved Representation of Surface Emissivity Effects on Longwave Radiation in a Coupled Earth System Model

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Many Earth System Models (ESMs) approximate surface emissivity as constant over all wavelengths (broadband). This approximation misrepresents the spectral distribution of longwave (LW) flux and introduces error in the LW atmospheric heating rate.

A GEO‐LEO Imager Data Set for Characterizing Rapid Changes of Global Aerosol Properties

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Aerosols, the ubiquitous small particulates in our atmosphere, have climate, air quality, and/or other impacts far from their original sources. The Dark Target Algorithm (DTA), originally developed for retrieving aerosol properties from satellite imagers in Low‐Earth Orbit (LEO), has been ported to imagers in Geostationary (GEO) orbit. Using a

A New Lidar‐Based Observational Estimate for a Short‐Term Longwave High‐Cloud Feedback

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract High clouds play a substantial role in modulating the Earth's top‐of‐atmosphere radiative energy budget. Models project that changes in high‐cloud altitude and area in response to warming will have a net warming effect within the tropics. Yet, to our knowledge, a robust global observational constraint of a short‐term cloud feedback associated ...

Impact of a Stratocumulus Scheme on Clouds and Feedbacks in MIROC7

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Marine stratocumulus (Sc) clouds exert a strong cooling effect on climate by reflecting solar radiation, yet many climate models underestimate their amount and cause uncertainty in equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS). Herein, we show that incorporating a physically based Sc parameterization into the seventh version of the Model for ...

Underestimated Arctic “Radiator Fin” Effect in Climate Model Simulations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract The Earth's energy balance is crucial for maintaining a stable climate. Studies have shown accelerated net energy accumulation by the Earth in recent decades, mainly due to enhanced solar absorption. Meanwhile, observations show a pronounced increase in Arctic (north of 70N) outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), which acts as “radiator fins” to ...
