Ecdysteroids in developing ovaries and eggs of the tobacco hornworm
Steroids, 1984Ecdysteroids of ovaries and newly-laid eggs (0- to 1-hour-old) of the tobacco hornworm are present mainly as conjugates (greater than 95%). Newly-laid eggs contain ecdysteroid conjugates equivalent to 21 micrograms of 26-hydroxyecdysone and 0.73 micrograms of ecdysone per gram of eggs.

Immunolocalization of chitin synthase in the tobacco hornworm
Cell and Tissue Research, 2002To start investigation of chitin synthesis and peritrophic membrane formation in the midgut of Manduca sexta, we have cloned a cDNA fragment encoding chitin synthase. Northern blots with a corresponding RNA probe revealed a single transcript of 4.7 kb, which was most prominent in poly(A) RNA isolated from the anterior and median midgut as well as from ...

Tobacco Budworm, Tobacco Hornworm, and Aphid Control, 1988
Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1989Abstract ‘NC2326’ tobacco was transplanted at the Bowen Farm site at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, Ga., 28 Apr in a field of Ocilla loamy sand soil. Plots 4 rows wide (44 inches apart) by 20 ft long were arranged in a randomized complete block design replicated 4 times. Plots were separated by single untreated border rows

Cuticular melanization in the tobacco hornworm larva
Insect Biochemistry, 1984Abstract The pigment in the black cuticle of allatectomized and of black mutant Manduca sexta larvae was isolated and shown to be melanin by its chemical solubility properties. Labelled tyrosine was rapidly incorporated into this cuticular melanin when injected 4 hr before the onset of melanization. By contrast, labelled DOPA or dopamine was only

Adaptation of tobacco hornworms to the ingestion of nicotine
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1964Abstract Radiometric, chromatographic, and spectrophotometric data show excretion and egestion of intact nicotine to be an explantion for the adaptation of the tobacco hornworm, Protoparce sexta (Johan.), to tobacco. There was no evidence for the metabolism of nicotine to less toxic metabolites after topical, injected, or ingested doses.

Pathogens of tobacco and tomato hornworms
Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 1967Abstract The bacteria Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Enterobacter aerogenes were the predominant pathogens in 7 of 11 samples of hornworms selected from populations with high mortality. Granulosis virus was the predominant pathogen in two samples; Bacillus thuringiensis caused most of the mortality in ...

Pericardial cell ultrastructure in the tobacco hornworm
International Journal of Insect Morphology and Embryology, 1999The ultrastructure of the pericardial athrocytes of fifth instar tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta L. (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) was examined by transmission electron microscopy. These cells are highly specialized for the maintenance of hemolymph homeostasis by synthesis and secretion of some proteins, and uptake and degradation of others.

Regulation of melanization of tobacco hornworm larval cuticle in vitro
Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1984AbstractWhen tobacco hornworm larvae (Manduca sexta) are allatectomized 5–6 hr before head capsule slippage in the molt to the fifth (final) larval instar, the new cuticle melanizes 3 hr before ecdysis. After explantation between 7 and 3 hr before the onset of melanization, the new cuticle was found to melanize in vitro in Grace's medium only if β ...
