Phospholipase A2 in hemocytes of the tobacco hornworm,Manduca sexta

Archives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology, 1996
On the hypothesis that prostaglandins and other eicosanoids mediate nodulation responses to bacterial infections in insects, we describe an intracellular phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in homogenates prepared from hemocytes collected from the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta. PLA2 hydrolyzes fatty acids from the sn-2 position of phospholipids.

Control of Tobacco Fleabeetles and Tobacco Hornworms on Dark Fire-Cured Tobacco, 1980

Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1981
Abstract Tobacco ‘Madole’ was transplanted on May 27 at the Highland Rim Experiment Station, Springfield. Sprays were applied on a 14-day schedule for a total of 5 applications beginning June 11. Insecticides were applied with a high-clearance sprayer using a 10-row boom with one full-cone nozzle per row which delivered 20 gal/acre at 60

Dye Markers for Moths of the Tobacco Hornworm

Environmental Entomology, 1973
The cuticle and viscera of Manduca sexta (L.) moths were colored by including Calco® oil red dye in the larval rearing medium. Male moths so reared, using dye concentrations as low as 0.05% (wt/v), produced spermatophores in which the red color could be detected with the naked eye when they were removed from females that had mated with the dye-marked ...

Control of Tobacco Budworms and Tobacco Hornworms with Foliar Insecticides, 1983

Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1984
Abstract Tobacco was transplanted into plots 80 ft by 15 ft (four rows) on 17 May, at the Central Crops Res. Stn., Clayton, N.C. The predominant soil type was Marlboro loamy sand. Plots were arranged in a randomized complete-block design having three replicates. On 22 June, 15 uniformly sized plants from each of the two left-most rows in

Desmosterol, an intermediate in dealkylation of β-sitosterol in the tobacco hornworm

Life Sciences, 1967
The mechanism of dealkylation of phytosterols such as β-sitosterol to cholesterol in insects is an important and little understood biochemical transformation. This alteration of the sterol side chain provides a means for omnivorous and particularly phytophagous insects to obtain their essential cholesterol from foodstuffs that are either very low or ...

Preliminary Studies on Mass Rearing of the Tobacco Hornworm

Journal of Economic Entomology, 1964
An estimated 20,000 pupae of the tobacco hornworm, Protoparce sexta (Johannson), were produced in one lot in 1962 at Oxford, N. C. Moths were allowed to oviposit on tobacco growing in a 1/4-acre field cage. Fifth-instar larvae were collected from the cage and placed on cut tobacco plants suspended on racks above specially designed rearing tables ...

Control of Tobacco Budworms and Tobacco Hornworms with Foliar Insecticides, 1982

Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1984
Abstract On 5 May, tobacco was transplanted into plots 80 by 15 ft (4 rows) on a Dothan loamy sand soil at the Central Crops Res. Stn., Clayton, N.C. Plots were arranged in a randomized complete-block design with three replicates. On 8 June, 15 uniform sized plants were tagged and infested with one, 2-day-old laboratory-reared budworm ...

Purification and properties of trehalase from tobacco hornworm larvae

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1971
Abstract Trehalase was extracted from homogenates of whole fifth instar tobacco hornworm larvae, Manduca sexta , and purified by (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 precipitation, DEAE cellulose ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration on Sephadex G-200. Final purification was about 250-fold. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be 250,000.

Evaluation of Experimental Insecticides for Control of Hornworms on Tobacco

Journal of Economic Entomology, 1968
Nine compounds were tested on mature tobacco plants as foliage sprays for the control of the early instars of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (Johannson), and the tomato hornworm, M. quinquemaculata (Haworth). Three systemic insecticides, NIA 10242 (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methylcarbamate), American Cyanamid CL-47470 (cyclic ...
