An Econometric Model of the Tobacco Industry [PDF]

open access: yesThe Review of Economics and Statistics, 1969
N thi's paper we describe an econometric model of the American tobacco industry for the period 1949 through 1966. The model contains 19 equations and is divided into three major blocks (1) leaf production, (2) leaf price, and (3) cigarettes. The objective is to explain the behavior of the tobacco industry over an 18-year period.

Extracellular Vesicular Delta‐Like Ligand 3 and Subtype Transcription Factors for Small Cell Lung Cancer Diagnosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) harbors high molecular heterogeneity. Using a new liquid biopsy assay, SCLC subtypes can be identified by measuring mRNA of subtype transcription factors (ASCL1, POU2F3, and NEUROD1) in exosome‐rich extracellular vesicles. Combining with Delta‐like ligand 3 (DLL3) mRNA in exosomes and its membrane protein in extracellular ...

Vertical differences in carbon metabolic diversity and dominant flora of soil bacterial communities in farmlands

open access: yesScientific Reports
The carbon cycle in soil is significantly influenced by soil microbes. To investigate the vertical distribution of the dominant groups in agricultural soil and the carbon metabolic diversity of soil bacteria, 45 soil samples from the 0 ~ 50 cm soil layer

SmokEng: Towards Fine-grained Classification of Tobacco-related Social Media Text [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Contemporary datasets on tobacco consumption focus on one of two topics, either public health mentions and disease surveillance, or sentiment analysis on topical tobacco products and services. However, two primary considerations are not accounted for, the language of the demographic affected and a combination of the topics mentioned above in a fine ...

The influence of societal individualism on a century of tobacco use: modelling the prevalence of smoking [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Public Health 15 (1280), 1-13 (2015), 2014
Smoking of tobacco is predicted to cause approximately six million deaths worldwide in 2014. Responding effectively to this epidemic requires a thorough understanding of how smoking behaviour is transmitted and modified. Here, we present a new mathematical model of the social dynamics that cause cigarette smoking to spread in a population.

Nanoparticle Delivery of Antisense miR162 Inhibits Invasive Habitat Adaption of Alternanthera Philoxeroides

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that the miRNA pathway plays a key role in the invasive growth of Alternanthera philoxeroides in aquatic habitats. Specifically, miR162 is critical for its invasive success, facilitating stem elongation and enhancing survival during submergence.

How to Beat Science and Influence People: Policy Makers and Propaganda in Epistemic Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
In their recent book Merchants of Doubt [New York:Bloomsbury 2010], Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway describe the "tobacco strategy", which was used by the tobacco industry to influence policy makers regarding the health risks of tobacco products. The strategy involved two parts, consisting of (1) promoting and sharing independent research supporting the ...
