Modeling seed germination data to meet biodiversity conservation needs in the Mediterranean

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Workflow to assess the availability and quality of germination data and assign species' thermal risk in the Mediterranean. (a) Assessment of data availability, including the phylogenetic distribution of the number of records (i.e. available germination data); (b) data quality assessment; and (c) assignment of climate risk categories for species that ...

Improving efficiency in conservation planning by modeling species‐specific responses to threat abatement

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Reversing ongoing biodiversity loss requires effectively managing anthropogenic threats. Although conservation actions can mitigate these threats, prioritizing and targeting such actions remain challenging because species respond differently depending on the nature of the threats and their biological traits.

Evaluating a structured expert elicitation approach for adaptive conservation management based on lessons from five years in practice

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Adaptive management of threatened species relies on having ex ante estimates of species’ responses to different interventions. Structured expert elicitation is often used to generate these estimates, but comparisons of these expert‐predicted outcomes with observed results are rare.

Steep declines of colonial wading birds in northeastern North America's largest breeding population

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
This study analyzed 22 years of complete nest census data for colonial wading birds in New York–New Jersey Harbor, the largest breeding population in the northeastern United States. Over this period, the total wading bird population decreased by 27%, a rate exceeding average long‐term declines across North American birds.

Ethnic Groups' Access to State Power and Group Size

open access: yesEconomics &Politics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ethnic‐based political inequality is widespread, yet its underlying drivers remain poorly understood. Using data on 575 groups across 181 countries from 1946 to 2021, and restricting attention to non‐dominant groups, I document a ...
