Phylogenetic farming: Can evolutionary history predict crop rotation via the soil microbiome?

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 13, Issue 8, Page 1984-1999, September 2020., 2020
Abstract Agriculture has long employed phylogenetic rules whereby farmers are encouraged to rotate taxonomically unrelated plants in shared soil. Although this forms a central tenet of sustainable agriculture, strangely, this on‐farm “rule of thumb” has never been rigorously tested in a scientific framework.

Examination of a partial dietary self‐monitoring approach for behavioral weight management

open access: yesObesity Science &Practice, Volume 6, Issue 4, Page 353-364, August 2020., 2020
Summary Introduction Dietary self‐monitoring in behavioral weight loss programmes traditionally involves keeping track of all foods and beverages to achieve a calorie deficit. While effective, adherence declines over time. WW™ (formerly Weight Watchers), a widely available commercial weight management programme, sought to pilot an approach that ...

The public health risk posed by Listeria monocytogenes in frozen fruit and vegetables including herbs, blanched during processing

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 18, Issue 4, April 2020., 2020
Abstract A multi‐country outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes ST6 linked to blanched frozen vegetables (bfV) took place in the EU (2015–2018). Evidence of food‐borne outbreaks shows that L. monocytogenes is the most relevant pathogen associated with bfV. The probability of illness per serving of uncooked bfV, for the elderly (65–74 years old) population,

Induced mutation in tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.)

open access: yesBiologia Plantarum, 1982
To induce mutation in tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.) commonly grown for its fruit value, seeds were treated with three alkylating agents (dimethyl sulphate, diethyl sulphate and methyl ethane sulphonate) and gamma rays. Seven viable and five chlorophyll mutant types were screened both from M1 and M2 generations.
