Ionospheric disturbances observed over China after 2022 January 15 Tonga volcano eruption

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 2023
SUMMARY At 04:14:45 UT on 2022 January 15, a powerful eruption of the submarine Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai volcano occurred at about 30 km south of the Ha'apai Islands in the Kingdom of Tonga (at −20.55° N, −175.39° E). This eruption caused atmospheric waves that spread worldwide.

Explosive Eruption of the Tonga Underwater Volcano Modulates the Ionospheric E‐Region Current on 15 January 2022

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
The sudden eruption of the Tonga underwater volcano (20.53°S, 175.38°W) on 15 January 2022 generated explosions that triggered blast waves traveling away from the eruption.

EVALUATION OF TSUNAMI SOURCE MECHANISMS ALONG THE TONGA TRENCH AND VOLCANIC ARC – Case Study: Earthquake and Tsunami of 29 September 2009 [PDF]

open access: yesScience of Tsunami Hazards, 2022
The present report provides an evaluation of the tectonics of the upper part of the Tonga Trench and Volcanic Arc Region. The overall tectonics of the region are dominated by the convergence of the Pacific and Australia plates.

Multiphase turbulent flow explains lightning rings in volcanic plumes

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment, 2023
Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH), a submarine caldera volcano of the Tonga archipelago, erupted explosively on January 15, 2022. The eruption generated the highest concentration of lightning events ever recorded, producing characteristic ring patterns of

Electromagnetic ULF/ELF oscillations caused by the eruption of the Tonga volcano

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics, 2023
The eruption of the Tonga volcano on January 13 and 15, 2022 and related intense lightning activity led to the excitation of a number of specific electromagnetic oscillations in different frequency ranges. We examine properties of these oscillations, using data from magnetometers of various types located in Kamchatka and in the Pacific region.

Large‐Scale Disturbances in the Upper Thermosphere Induced by the 2022 Tonga Volcanic Eruption

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
The effects of volcanic eruptions on the ionosphere have been well studied, however, evidence for the anticipated upper atmospheric neutral variations and their exact extents of change are rarely available.
