Experimental Tests and FEM Simulations of Flank Breakage on Tooth of Gears with Respect to Different Nitrided Depths

open access: hybridApplied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
This article deals with the reasons for gear failure - Flank breakage on tooth of spur gears with helical and straight involute gears. Gear flank breakage can be observed on edge zone-hardened gears. The creation of flank and tooth breakage and FEM simulation of flank breakage on tooth are described in this article.

Review on Tooth Flank Fracture Failure of Hardened Gears

open access: yesJixie chuandong, 2022
There is a new tooth failure mode for hardened gears called tooth flank fracture(TFF). ISO published a technical specification for calculating the load capacity of tooth flank failure in 2019.

Tooth Flank Breakage: Influences on Subsurface Initiated Fatigue Failures of Case Hardened Gears

open access: greenVolume 5: 25th International Conference on Design Theory and Methodology; ASME 2013 Power Transmission and Gearing Conference, 2013
Pitting and tooth root breakage are typical fatigue failure modes of case hardened gears. Both failure types are usually initiated at the surface or close to the surface. General trends in modern gear industry, such as improved gear design with adequate flank modifications, high-quality gear materials and high-performance lubricants, modern ...

Parameter study on the calculated risk of tooth flank fracture of case hardened gears

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing, 2017
Due to better material qualities, new surface finishing methods and better heat-treatment process reliability, flank surface damages, such as pitting or micropitting, can be prevented in a reliable manner.
