Surface Diffusion in SnTe‐PbTe Monolayer Lateral Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The lateral heterostructures between 2D materials often suffer from the interdiffusion at the interfaces. Here, a surface diffusion mechanism is found to be dominating at the interfaces between semiconducting SnTe and PbTe monolayers. Atomically sharp interfaces can be achieved by suppressing this diffusion process. ABSTRACT The construction of complex

On the entanglement entropy of Maxwell theory: a condensed matter perspective

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2018
Despite the seeming simplicity of the theory, calculating (and even defining) entanglement entropy for the Maxwell theory of a U(1) gauge field in (3+1) dimensions has been the subject of controversy.

Controlling the surface band gap in topological states of matter

open access: yes, 2020

Fate of Topological States of Matter in the Presence of External Magnetic Fields

open access: yes, 2021
The quantum Hall (QH) effect, which can be induced in a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas by an external magnetic field, paved the way for topological concepts in condensed matter physics. While the QH effect can for that reason not exist without Landau levels, there is a plethora of topological phases of matter that can exist even in the absence of a ...

Bio‐Inspired Molecular Events in Poly(Ionic Liquids)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Originating from dipolar and polar inter‐ and intra‐chain interactions of the building blocks, the topologies and morphologies of poly(ionic liquids) (PIL) govern their nano‐ and micro‐processibility. Modulating the interactions of cation‐anion pairs with aliphatic dipolar components enables the tunability of properties, facilitated by “bottom‐up ...

Artificial Intelligence as the Next Visionary in Liquid Crystal Research

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The functions of AI in the research laboratory are becoming increasingly sophisticated, allowing the entire process of hypothesis formulation, material design, synthesis, experimental design, and reiterative testing to be automated. In our work, we conceive how the incorporation of AI in the laboratory environment will transform the role and ...

Topological Mixed States: Phases of Matter from Axiomatic Approaches

open access: yes
For closed quantum systems, topological orders are understood through the equivalence classes of ground states of gapped local Hamiltonians. The generalization of this conceptual paradigm to open quantum systems, however, remains elusive, often relying on operational definitions without fundamental principles.

Inducing Ferromagnetism by Structural Engineering in a Strongly Spin‐Orbit Coupled Oxide

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Magnetic materials with strong spin‐orbit coupling (SOC) are essential for the advancement of spin‐orbitronic devices, as they enable efficient spin‐charge conversion, complex magnetic structures, spin‐valley physics, topological phases and other exotic phenomena.

An Operational Definition of Topological Order

open access: yes, 2020
The unrivaled robustness of topologically ordered states of matter against perturbations has immediate applications in quantum computing and quantum metrology, yet their very existence poses a challenge to our understanding of phase transitions.

A Quantitative Printability Framework for Programmable Assembly of Pre‐Vascular Patterns via Laser‐Induced Forward Transfer

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Laser‐Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) is presented as a powerful micropatterning tool. An objective printability framework is developed to assess optimal printing parameter combinations. The technology is further explored for its ability to deterministically deposit microdroplets at predefined locations following CAD designs, enabling the patterning of
