Abstract The topside ionosphere scale height extracted from two empirical models are compared in the paper. The Topside Sounder Model (TSM) provides directly the scale height ( H T ), while the incoherent scatter radar ionospheric model (ISRIM) provides electron density profiles and its scale height ( H R ) is determined by the lowest gradient in ...

Observations of Vertical Reflections from the Topside Martian Ionosphere
Space Science Reviews, 2006The Martian ionosphere has for the first time been probed by a low frequency topside radio wave sounder experiment (MARSIS) (Gurnett et al., 2005). The density profiles in the Martian ionosphere have for the first time been observed for solar zenith angles less than 48 degrees. The sounder spectrograms typically have a single trace of echoes, which are

A regular disturbance in the topside ionosphere
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1969Continuous records of the electron content of the ionosphere, obtained over a period of several years, have shown that a large disturbance occurs between 10 P.M. and 1 A.M. on about half the nights in summer. After an initial small decrease, the electron content increases rapidly by about 30% and occasionally up to 80%. The increase lasts for 15 to 100

Global ionosphere dynamics inferred from topside sounding
2002Abstract Topside sounding from onboard the satellites is probably one of most powerful remote sensing techniques for ionospheric research. Two Russia (Soviet Union) satellites Intercosmos-19 and Cosmos 1809 gave opportunity to create the richest database on global distribution of the near-earth plasma.
