ABSTRACT I defend the non‐instrumentalist thesis that every adult member of a political society has a pro tanto fundamental moral right to an equal democratic say in determining the content of the laws to which she is subject. I begin by giving an account of an important kind of servility that has received only glancing notice in philosophical ...

The algebraic density property for affine toric varieties [PDF]
In this paper we generalize the algebraic density property to not necessarily smooth affine varieties relative to some closed subvariety containing the singular locus.

LOCAL SYSTEMS ON COMPLEMENTS OF ARRANGEMENTS OF SMOOTH, COMPLEX ALGEBRAIC HYPERSURFACES
We consider smooth, complex quasiprojective varieties $U$ that admit a compactification with a boundary, which is an arrangement of smooth algebraic hypersurfaces. If the hypersurfaces intersect locally like hyperplanes,

Higgs Branches of rank-0 5d theories from M-theory on (Aj , Al) and (Ak , Dn) singularities
We study the dynamics of M-theory on isolated non-toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularities of type (A j , A l ) and (A k , D n ), engineering five-dimensional rank-zero SCFTs.

Rational points on even‐dimensional Fermat cubics
Abstract We show that even‐dimensional Fermat cubic hypersurfaces are rational over any field of characteristic not equal to three, by constructing explicit rational parameterizations with polynomials of low degree. As a byproduct of our rationality constructions, we obtain estimates for the number of their rational points over a number field and ...

Topological Point Defects in SmC* Liquid Crystals Under Mechanical Disturbance
Tangetial air jet shear inducess island formation and nucleates topological point defects in uniform SmC films. Island bounded by edge dislocation loops shrink and transform into isolated point defects under continued shear. Mechanical perturbatio provides a controllable route for defect engineering in smectric liquid crystal thin films.

Secant varieties of toric varieties
v1, AMS LaTex, 5 figures, 25 pages; v2, reference added; v3, This is a major rewrite. We have strengthened our main results to include a classification of smooth lattice polytopes P such that Sec X_P does not have the expected dimension. (See Theorems 1.4 and 1.5.) There was also a considerable amount of reorganization, and some expository material was

ABSTRACT Background Emergence delirium (ED) is a common complication in pediatric anesthesia. Although intranasal dexmedetomidine (DEX) is widely used, its application is constrained by a slow onset, residual risk of ED in some patients, and risks such as bradycardia and hypotension.

Equivariant principal bundles for G–actions and G–connections
Given a complex manifold M equipped with an action of a group G, and a holomorphic principal H–bundle EH on M, we introduce the notion of a connection on EH along the action of G, which is called a G–connection.

Kinetic derivation of the Hessian geometric structure in chemical reaction networks
The theory of chemical kinetics forms the basis to describe the dynamics of chemical reaction networks. Owing to physical and thermodynamic constraints, the networks possess various structures, which can be utilized to characterize important properties ...
