Tornadoes in Portugal: An Overview

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
From 2000 onwards, a systematic documentation of tornado reports was maintained at the Portuguese Meteorological Service (IPMA). The characteristics of 195 tornado events over land and at sea off the coast of mainland Portugal, Azores, and Madeira ...

Stochastic Track Model for Tornado Risk Assessment in the U.S.

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2019
This paper presents the development of a stochastic tornado simulation model for the United States (US). The continental of the US is subjected to more than 1,000 tornadoes each year, causing significant financial losses and social disruption.

Adaptive Processing of Spatial-Keyword Data Over a Distributed Streaming Cluster

open access: yes, 2017
The widespread use of GPS-enabled smartphones along with the popularity of micro-blogging and social networking applications, e.g., Twitter and Facebook, has resulted in the generation of huge streams of geo-tagged textual data. Many applications require

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Environmental ingredients that lead to tornado outbreak and tornado failure: A comparison between two similar recurving tropical cyclones

open access: yesMeteorological Applications
Recurving tropical cyclones (TCs) can sometimes produce tornado outbreaks, while some TCs with similar tracks and intensities may produce none of tornado, which makes it challenging to assess tornado risk within recurving TCs. This study investigates two

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Polar Coronal Plumes as Tornado-Like Jets

open access: yes, 2018
We examine the dynamical behavior of white light polar plume structures in the inner corona that are observed from the ground during total solar eclipses, based on their EUV hot and cool emission line counterparts observed from space.
