The torsional rigidity of anisotropic prisms

Journal of Engineering Mathematics, 1975
Upper and lower bounds are obtained for the torsional rigidity of a prismatic cylinder of non-homogeneous anisotropic elastic material. Improvement in the bounds is obtained by expressing each bound as the quotient of two bordered determinants. Some analytical and numerical results are also presented.

Bounds for the Torsional Rigidity of Isotropic Beams

Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, 1962
Consider a cylindrical or prismatic beam of isotropic material. Let the cross-section of the beam be a simply-connected region S bounded by the closed contour C.

Ellipses and flow by torsional rigidity

Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society
Torsional rigidity defines a functional on smoothly bounded domains with compact closure in an ambient Riemannian manifold. When the ambient space is R

Measurement of Torsional Rigidity of Fibers

Textile Research Journal, 1976
Torsional rigidity is one of the most important mechanical properties of fibers and yarns and has considerable effects on the performance of fabrics made therefrom. A new instrument called a Torsional Rigidity Analyzer has been developed by TORAY Industries, Inc., a synthetic fiber manufacturer in Japan, for the measurement of torsional rigidity ...

Torsional rigidity of shells of revolution

Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1990
In this paper, the general equations of equilibrium for axisymmetrical deformation including the torsional deformation of revolutional shells are derived. It is shown that the shearing stress distribution due to torsion is independent of other stress components including those of membrane stress and bending stress.

The torsional rigidity of a composite solid

Fibre Science and Technology, 1975
Abstract An expression for the torsional rigidity of a general many-phased unidirectional composite solid is found. The result for the modulus of rigidity of a fibre-reinforced composite is compared with the longitudinal shear modulus described in the literature and with the available experimental results.

Torsional dynamics and rigidity of fractionated poly(dGdC)

Biopolymers, 1985
AbstractTime‐resolved fluorescence polarization anisotropy measurements were performed on two fractionated samples of duplex poly(dGdC) containing 230 (+40, −30) base pairs (bp) and 590 ± 40 bp. Deconvolution using the intermediate zone formula for the twisting correlation functions (which is not valid for such short DNAs) yields apparent torsion ...

Torsional Rigidity of Positively and Negatively Supercoiled DNA

Science, 1992
Time-correlated single-photon counting of intercalated ethidium bromide was used to measure the torsion constants of positively supercoiled, relaxed, and negatively supercoiled pBR322 DNA, which range in superhelix density from +0.042 to -0.123. DNA behaves as coupled, nonlinear torsional pendulums under superhelical stress, and the anharmonic term in ...
