Optically Levitated Nanodumbbell Torsion Balance and GHz Nanomechanical Rotor

open access: yes, 2018
Levitated optomechanics has great potentials in precision measurements, thermodynamics, macroscopic quantum mechanics and quantum sensing. Here we synthesize and optically levitate silica nanodumbbells in high vacuum.

Flexural fluctuations of the rotors of knife refiners [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The subject of the study is the flexural fluctuations of the rotors of knife refiners. The dynamic and mathematical models of rotors of disk mills are developed. As a result of research, a method for vibration calculation of rotors is proposed and tested.

Role of OH-stretch/torsion coupling and quantum yield effects in the first OH overtone spectrum of cis-cis HOONO [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
A joint theoretical and experimental investigation is undertaken to study the effects of OH-stretch/HOON torsion coupling and of quantum yield on the previously reported first overtone action spectrum of cis-cis HOONO (peroxynitrous acid).

Predicting and Rationalizing Piezoelectricity in Racemic Bioorganic Molecular Crystals

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Racemic molecular crystals, composed of equal mixtures of chiral enantiomeric components, are predicted to exhibit significant piezoelectric responses and favourable mechanical flexibility. This study identifies organic and bioorganic racemates as promising candidates for sustainable, lead‐free materials, enabling next‐generation applications in energy

3D‐Printed Hygroscopic Polymer Networks for High‐Humidity Triboelectric Nanogenerators to Wirelessly Power Implantable Electronic Devices‐ A Conceptual Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work develops 3D‐printable tribopolymer networks that can enhance triboelectric performance under high humidity environments. Polar hydrophilic functional groups and incorporation of zwitterionic monomers promote bound‐water–dominated interfacial polarization thereby increasing electrical outputs.

Platonic crystal with low-frequency locally resonant snail structures. Wave trapping, transmission amplification and shielding

open access: yes, 2018
We propose a new type of platonic crystal. The proposed microstructured plate includes snail resonators with low-frequency resonant vibrations. The particular dynamic effect of the resonators are highlighted by a comparative analysis of dispersion ...

Transducers Across Scales and Frequencies: A System‐Level Framework for Multiphysics Integration and Co‐Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Transducers convert physical signals into electrical and optical representations, yet each mechanism is bounded by intrinsic trade‐offs across bandwidth, sensitivity, speed, and energy. This review maps transduction mechanisms across physical scale and frequency, showing how heterogeneous integration and multiphysics co‐design transform isolated ...

Seismic isolation of small modular reactors using metamaterials

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2018
Adaptation of metamaterials at micro- to nanometer scales to metastructures at much larger scales offers a new alternative for seismic isolation systems. These new isolation systems, known as periodic foundations, function both as a structural foundation

Scattering of Elastic Waves in a Quasi-one-dimensional Cavity: Theory and Experiment

open access: yes, 2013
We study the scattering of torsional waves through a quasi-one-dimensional cavity both, from the experimental and theoretical points of view. The experiment consists of an elastic rod with square cross section.

Mechanical Fatigue in Liquid‐Metal Interconnects: Failure Mechanism Analysis and Validation of Improvement Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Multi‐million cycle reliability for liquid metal stretchable electronics is achieved through a continuous cycle of mechanical testing, failure mode and mechanism analysis and implementing subsequent mitigation strategies. ABSTRACT Stretchable electronics that combine mechanical compliance with reliable electrical performance are essential for ...
