Vibration and buckling of thin-walled composite I-beams with arbitrary lay-ups under axial loads and end moments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A finite element model with seven degrees of freedom per node is developed to study vibration and buckling of thin-walled composite I-beams with arbitrary lay-ups under constant axial loads and equal end moments.

A Biologically‐Architected Wear and Damage‐Resistant Nanoparticle Coating From the Radular Teeth of Cryptochiton stelleri

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The ultrahard teeth of mollusks that feed on rocky substrates contain a wear‐resistant coating on their surfaces consisting of densely packed mesocrystalline magnetic nanoparticles within an organic matrix. These coatings display significant hardness and toughness through their highly controlled mesocrystalline architectures.

MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.

Vibrations in Marine Power Transmission System

open access: yesScientific Journal of Gdynia Maritime University, 2017
Vibration analyses of marine machines and structures are one of the most important during the design process as well as during exploitation. Vibrations of ship hull (including superstructure and main engine body) are separately analysed from the ...

Scaling Torsional Drilling Vibrations: A Simulation-Based Comparison of Downscale and Upscale Drill Strings Under Varying Torque Conditions

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Torsional vibrations pose a serious challenge in drilling operations and can lead to effects such as stick-slip phenomena, tool wear, and reduced drilling efficiency.

A simple approach to the correlation of rotovibrational states in four-atomic molecules

open access: yes, 1994
The problem of correlation between quantum states of four-atomic molecules in different geometrical configurations is reviewed in detail. A general, still simple rule is obtained which allows one to correlate states of a linear four-atomic molecule with ...

Recent Progress on Flexible Multimodal Sensors: Decoupling Strategies, Fabrication and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
In this review, we establish a tripartite decoupling framework for flexible multimodal sensors, which elucidates the underlying principles of signal crosstalk and their solutions through material design, structural engineering, and AI algorithms. We also demonstrate its potential applications across environmental monitoring, health monitoring, human ...

Advanced Design for Weakly Coupled Resonators by Automatic Active Optimization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
An Automatic Active Optimization (AAO) strategy integrates machine learning predictors and genetic algorithms in a closed‐loop workflow. By iteratively expanding its dataset with new discoveries, AAO overcomes the limits of conventional methods. This approach finds superior microstructural designs beyond the initial sample space. We demonstrate this on

Dilatant-Fluid Torsional Vibration Damper for a Four-Stroke Diesel Engine Crankshaft

open access: yesPolish Maritime Research, 2023
This paper presents a study of a viscous torsional vibration damper for a crankshaft of a four-stroke diesel engine. The reliable operation of a widely used silicone-type viscous damper depends on the ability of the silicone oil to absorb the energy of ...
