Leicester Cough Questionnaire: translation to Portuguese and cross-cultural adaptation for use in Brazil

open access: yesJornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia, 2014
Objective: To translate the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) to Portuguese and adapt it for use in Brazil. Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation of a quality of life questionnaire requires a translated version that is conceptually equivalent to the ...

Gambler's Ruin? Some Aspects of Coin Tossing [PDF]

open access: yesThe Mathematical Scientist, 35, No. 2 (2010), 2019
What is the average number of tosses needed before a particular sequence of heads and tails turns up? We solve the problem didactically, starting with doubles, finding that a tail, followed by a head, turns up on the average after only four tosses, while six tosses are needed for two successive heads.

Tosse em pediatria Cough in paediatrics

Task-Difficulty-Aware Efficient Object Arrangement Leveraging Tossing Motions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This study explores a pick-and-toss (PT) as an alternative to pick-and-place (PP), allowing a robot to extend its range and improve task efficiency. Although PT boosts efficiency in object arrangement, the placement environment critically affects the success of tossing.

Quantum Random Walks without a Coin Toss [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2005
We construct a quantum random walk algorithm, based on the Dirac operator instead of the Laplacian. The algorithm explores multiple evolutionary branches by superposition of states, and does not require the coin toss instruction of classical randomised algorithms.

A Feyman-Kac approach to a paper of Chung and Feller on fluctuations in the coin-tossing game [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
A classical result of K. L. Chung and W. Feller deals with the partial sums $S_k$ arising in a fair coin-tossing game. If $N_n$ is the number of "positive" terms among $S_1, S_2,\dots,S_n$ then the quantity $P(N_{2n}=2r)$ takes an elegant form. We lift the restriction on an even number of tosses and give a simple expression for $P(N_{2n+1}=r)$, $r=0,1 ...
