Ultrasonic Inspection of Weld Defects Using Total Focusing Method
2021Ultrasonic arrays have been widely employed in industrial applications because of their ability to perform quick inspections for detection and characterization of flaws. The total focusing method (TFM) is an advanced ultrasonic imaging technique that utilizes the full matrix capture (FMC) data of the phased array elements to generate a high-resolution ...

Effects of directivity function on total focusing method imaging performance
2014 IEEE Far East Forum on Nondestructive Evaluation/Testing, 2014The Total Focus Method (TFM) is a post-processing algorithm which uses all elements in the array to focus in both transmission and reception at every image point. The time-domain signals is captured in a process termed Full Matrix Capture (FMC). In this paper, the main objective is to research the effects of directivity function on the TFM.

Effects of array transducer inconsistencies on total focusing method imaging performance
NDT and E International, 2011The total focusing method (TFM) is a post-processing imaging algorithm for ultrasonic array data in which the array is synthetically focused at every image pixel. In this paper, the performance of the TFM imaging algorithm is examined in the presence of inter-element variability in the array, coupling and instrumentation.

Efficiency improvement of total focusing imaging based on sparse array method
2014 IEEE Far East Forum on Nondestructive Evaluation/Testing, 2014In this paper, a design concept of sparse array is applied to total focusing imaging technique. During the process, the elements of a phased array are partially selected according to the theory of effective aperture, in order to reduce the amount of captured data and shorten the processing time of TFM imaging.

Ultrasonic imaging in coarse-grained stainless steels by total focusing method
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2016In the present work, the Total Focusing Method (TFM) is used to image flaws in coarse-grained steels with a contact phased-array probe. In order to reduce the noise introduced by the heterogeneous structure, as well as artifacts due to surface guided waves, the Decomposition of the Time Reversal Operator method is performed before calculating TFM ...

The post-processing of ultrasonic array data using the total focusing method
Insight - Non-Destructive Testing and Condition Monitoring, 2004The use of ultrasonic arrays for NDT has increased significantly in recent years. This is due to the flexibility of array systems which can be electronically configured to produce plane, focused, steered and steer-focusedbeams. In this way, one array transducer can do the job of many standard single-element transducers.

Total Focusing Method with Subsampling in Space and Frequency Domain for Ultrasound NDT
2019 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS), 2019In this paper, we present a compressed sensing model for 2D Full Matrix Capture data from a uniform linear array. Data is reconstructed via a matrix-free implementation of the Total Focusing Method (TFM) combined with the Fast Iterative Shrinkage/ Thresholding Algorithm.

Ultrasonic total focusing method for internal defects in composite insulators
Insight - Non-Destructive Testing and Condition MonitoringIn order to address the problem of poor imaging detection of internal defects caused by the multi-layer curved surface structure and strongly attenuating material of composite insulators, the total focusing method (TFM) with two-layer curved surface correction was investigated.

Research on Detection of Weld Defects with Multi-Wave Total Focusing Method
2019 14th Symposium on Piezoelectrcity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA), 2019In the modern industry, welded structures are widely used, especially in the aerospace and nuclear industries. In order to prevent accidents, defect detection must be performed. Due to the high anisotropy and non-uniformity in the soldered area, the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of the imaging defect is low and the image quality is poor.

Implementation of total focusing method for phased array ultrasonic imaging on FPGA
SPIE Proceedings, 2015This paper describes a multi-FPGA imaging system dedicated for the real-time imaging using the Total Focusing Method (TFM) and Full Matrix Capture (FMC). The system was entirely described using Verilog HDL language and implemented on Altera Stratix IV GX FPGA development board.
