A Study of Influences of Inlet Total Pressure Distortions on Clearance Flow in an Axial Compressor

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2021
Abstract The rotating distortion generated by upstream wakes or low speed flow cells is a kind of phenomenon in the inlet of middle and rear stages of an axial compressor. Highly complex inflow can obviously affect the performance and the stability of these stages, and is needed to be considered during compressor design. In this paper, a

Effects of Circumferential Inlet Total-Pressure Distortion on a Compressor

2009 International Conference on Computer and Automation Engineering, 2009
A program based on the parallel compressor is developed for the calculation of inlet total-pressure distortion on a compressor. The mixing of momentum, quality and energy is considered. Performance at four speed lines has beenpresented with 6% and 8% of distortion index by simulation. Results are reasonable and in line with the previous test.

Computational Simulation of Dynamic Total-Pressure Distortion in an S-Diffuser

48th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2012
A prediction of dynamic pressure distortion has been made with time-accurate CFD technology. Comparisons were made between CFD and test data for steady-state and dynamic total-pressure obtained at the AIP of an S-duct. These comparisons included mean, standard deviation, spectrum and correlation properties.

A Centrifugal Compressor Operability Correlation With Combined Total Pressure and Swirl Distortion

Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Fans and Blowers; Marine; Honors and Awards, 2017
Inlet swirl distortion has become a major area of concern in the gas turbine engine community. Gas turbine engines are increasingly installed with more complicated and tortuous inlet systems, like those found on embedded installations on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Auxiliary Power Units (APU).

Numerical Investigation on Propagation Characteristics of Inlet Total-Pressure Distortion in a Centrifugal Compressor

Volume 2D: Turbomachinery — Multidisciplinary Design Approaches, Optimization, and Uncertainty Quantification; Radial Turbomachinery Aerodynamics; Unsteady Flows in Turbomachinery, 2021
Abstract The propagation characteristics of inlet total-pressure distortion in a centrifugal compressor are investigated by full-annulus unsteady three-dimensional numerical simulation. The inlet distortions considered in the paper are the total-pressure distortions covering a 60-deg sector (60deg distortion) and three 20-deg sectors (3 ...

Transonic Axial Compressors With Total Pressure Inlet Flow Field Distortions

Volume 1A: Aircraft Engine; Fans and Blowers, 2014
Non-uniform inlet flow has come back into focus of research during the last years due to the need of increasing the operational range of airborne engines. Higher climbing rates for lower noise pollution at airports as well as boundary layer ingesting inlet designs lead to the demand of inlet distortion resistant engines and compressors, in particular ...

Total pressure distortion levels at the aerodynamic interface plane of a military aircraft

The Aeronautical Journal, 2015
AbstractMilitary aircrafts are often subjected to severe flight maneuvers with high Angles-of -Attack (AOA) and Angles of Sideslip (AOSS). These flight attitudes induce non-uniform in flow conditions to their gas turbine engines which may include distortion of inlet total pressure and total temperature at the Aerodynamic Interface Plane (AIP ...

Demonstration of a Transient Total Pressure Distortion Generator for Simulating Aircraft Inlet Distortion in Turbine Engine Ground Tests

Volume 1: Turbo Expo 2007, 2007
The development of high-performance aircraft demands the successful integration of the airframe, engine, and control systems. Advancements in aircraft technologies bring with them the need to improve the computational and experimental tools applied to the airframe-engine compatibility evaluations.
