Faithful men and false women: Love‐suicide in early modern English popular print

Abstract This article explores the representation of suicide committed for love in English popular print in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It shows how, within ballads and pamphlets, suicide resulting from failed courtship was often portrayed as romantic and an expression of devotion.

It is based on a rigorous survey of the genre, picking out common themes and anecdotes, as well as discussing their reception and sociable functions. Secularism, Gender and Masculinity in Nineteenth‐Century Cremation in Europe and the USA

ABSTRACT This essay explores, from transnational perspectives, the early history of modern cremation, which developed in the long nineteenth century with secularist connotations.
