A brief history of the tourniquet [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Vascular Surgery, 2012
Abstract : The tourniquet is a device first used in antiquity; it has been praised or vilified throughout the ages, as it has been at times life-saving, and at other times limb-threatening.1 It interestingly has become a widely used tool in the current wars of Afghanistan and Iraq by most coalition medics, often with great success.

Kirschner Wire as a Reference Marker for the Positioning of a Syndesmotic Screw: A Radiological Study and Clinical Evaluation

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 14, Issue 12, Page 3251-3260, December 2022., 2022
Up to now, there is no static and reliable intraoperative marker for accurately placing a distal syndesmotic screw. In this study, a gap was found at 2.5 cm proximal to the ankle plafond, which was wide enough to accommodate a 1.6‐mm Kirschner wire which can be used as a sign of the fibular incisura.

Treatment of Aneurysmal Bone Cysts by Minimally Invasive Curettage and Allogenic Bone Impaction Grafting: Mid‐to Long‐term Results

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 14, Issue 12, Page 3171-3177, December 2022., 2022
Percutaneous curettage and impaction of allogenic bone graft mixed with autogenic bone marrow aspirate can induce complete resolution of the primary ABCs without use of other adjuvants or any form of internal fixation. Objective Recurrence is the main hinderance in treatment of aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs).

Tourniquet-induced nerve compression injuries are caused by high pressure levels and gradients – a review of the evidence to guide safe surgical, pre-hospital and blood flow restriction usage

open access: yesBMC Biomedical Engineering, 2020
Tourniquets in orthopaedic surgery safely provide blood free surgical fields, but their use is not without risk. Tourniquets can result in temporary or permanent injury to underlying nerves, muscles, blood vessels and soft tissues.

Comparison of Two Different Percutaneous Screw Fixations for Treating Herbert B2‐Type Acute Scaphoid Fractures

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 14, Issue 12, Page 3187-3194, December 2022., 2022
For Herbert B2‐type acute scaphoid fracture with fracture displacement >1 mm, compare to closed reduction percutaneous cannulated screw internal fixation, arthroscopic‐assisted percutaneous cannulated screw internal fixation has less fluoroscopy times, short fracture healing time, good recovery effect of wrist function, and less complications ...

THE TOURNIQUET IN SURGERY [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 1962
The history of surgery is to a large extent written around the record of its technical advances. A pneumatic tourniquet is a humble instrument, when compared with many of the more complicated mechanical devices in the modern operation theatre. Nevertheless, it has played a significant role in making possible the precise operations of present-day ...

The effects of tourniquet use on blood loss in primary total knee arthroplasty for patients with osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, 2019
BackgroundThe tourniquet is a common medical instrument used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, there has always been a debate about the use of a tourniquet and there is no published meta-analysis to study the effects of a tourniquet on blood ...
