Diphtheria toxin can be converted into a highly immunogenic and irreversibly detoxified vaccine either using the conventional process in which the crude toxin is formalinised and subsequently purified (DTxd(conv)) or by detoxification of the highly purified toxin (DTxd(new)). In this study, both DTxd(new) and DTxd(conv) were evaluated by use of physico-

The Immunopurification of Tetanus Toxoid
Journal of Applied Bacteriology, 1974S ummary . The isolation of tetanus toxoid by immunosorption chromatography is described. The immunosorbent, a polymerized horse antitoxin, was used repeatedly with little loss in capacity and recoveries of toxoid of > 90%

Hypersensitivity to tetanus toxoid
Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1973Abstract A high incidence of cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions to tetanus toxoid, 63 per cent immediate, 32 per cent Arthus type, and 74 per cent delayed reactions, were found in 70 tetanus-immunized individuals who had no history of clinical hypersensitivity to tetanus toxoid.

A NUMBER of reports dealing with reactions following immunization against tetanus have appeared in recent years. 1 The elimination of Witte's® peptone from the medium in which the bacillus is grown seemed to reduce the frequency of disturbing reactions.

To the Editor.— I would like to respond to the question regarding the Arthus phenomenon following immunization with diphtheria-pertussin-tetanus (DPT) in the QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS section (238:2307, 1977). As noted by Zack Haddad, MD, the incidence of the Arthus-type response diminished when the interval between tetanus toxoid boosters increased.

Immunization with Clostridium Septicum Toxoid and with Trivalent Gas Gangrene Toxoid
The Journal of Immunology, 1947Abstract The purpose of this report is to record observations showing that a nontoxic antigen can be prepared from the toxin of Clostridium septicum, and to show that immunization of humans against the toxins of Cl. welchii, Cl. septicum and Cl. oedematiens can be carried out simultaneously through the use of a polyvalent toxoid.
