Trace metal distributions in the transition zone from the Greenland Ice Sheet to the surface water in Kangerlussuaq fjord (67° N) [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Glacial rock flour (GRF), an ultra-fine sediment formed beneath glaciers, contains high concentrations of silicate and trace metals, including iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn).

Atmospheric trace metal concentrations, solubility and deposition fluxes in remote marine air over the south-east Atlantic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Total and soluble trace metal concentrations were determined in atmospheric aerosol and rainwater samples collected during seven cruises in the south-east Atlantic.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Distribution and environmental quality of trace metal(loid)s in water and surface sediments of northern Liaodong Bay, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science
Coastal areas such as bays, characterized by intense land-sea interactions and frequent human activities, are confronting ecological pressures induced by trace metal(loid) pollution in aquatic environments.

Trace metals in populations of Marphysa sanguinea (Montagu, 1813) from Sado estuary: effect of body size on accumulation

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2009
Concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd were measured in four surface sediments, whole worm tissues and faeces collected along Águas de Moura channel in Sado estuary. Six wet-weight worm classes were used to analyze the influence of weight.

Trace metal analysis of element on material surface using pulse CO2 laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy applying vaporization technique

open access: yesHeliyon, 2020
Trace elemental analysis on a surface of material has been recently imperative to be carried out especially in material industries. In this study, sophisticated setup of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy has been arranged and demonstrated by employing

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

VLT-UVES abundance analysis of four giants in NGC 6553 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Metal-rich globular clusters trace the formation of bulges. Abundance ratios in the metal-rich globular clusters such as NGC 6553 can constrain the formation timescale of the Galactic bulge.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for
