Annexin A3 Represses Endothelial Permeability and Inflammation During Sepsis via Actin Cytoskeleton Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Annexin A3 (ANXA3) plays an endogenous protective role in endothelial dysfunction in sepsis by stabilizing the actin cytoskeleton, modulating cell permeability, and inhibiting pATF2/CD62E inflammatory signaling. Abstract Increased endothelial permeability and a dysregulated inflammatory response play key roles in organ damage in sepsis.

Computational study of the vibrating disturbances to the lung function [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the III European COnference on Computational Mechanics, eds. C.A. Mota Soares et. al. 2006, pp. 1464.1-1464.15, 2007
Frequently during its lifetime a human organism is subjected to the acoustical and similar to them vibrating impacts. Under the certain conditions such influence may cause physiological changes in the organs functioning. Thus the study of the oscillatory mechanical impacts to the organism is very important task of the numerical physiology. It allows to

Cancer mortality in Portugal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Following Population News, Trends and Attitudes #6 it was possible to identify that, despite circulatory system diseases represent the leading causes of death (COD) in Portugal, the share of deaths caused by neoplasms is increasing with time.

Keypoint Transfer for Fast Whole-Body Segmentation

open access: yes, 2018
We introduce an approach for image segmentation based on sparse correspondences between keypoints in testing and training images. Keypoints represent automatically identified distinctive image locations, where each keypoint correspondence suggests a ...

Reinforcing Stromal Cell Spheroid Through Red‐Light Preconditioning for Advanced Vascularization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel approach to enhance stromal cell therapy for myocardial infarction by combining OLED‐based photobiomodulation (OPBM) preconditioning with 3D spheroid culture of hADSCs. The engineered spheroids improve angiogenesis, arterialization, and cardiac function in vivo, offering a next‐generation therapeutic strategy to overcome ...

The Chan-Vese Algorithm [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2011
Segmentation is the process of partitioning a digital image into multiple segments (sets of pixels). Such common segmentation tasks including segmenting written text or segmenting tumors from healthy brain tissue in an MRI image, etc. Chan-Vese model for active contours is a powerful and flexible method which is able to segment many types of images ...

Recurrent chest infections in two young non-smoker men [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Pulmonary mucinous cystic carcinomas are rare salivary gland type carcinomas of the lung. They form part of a wide spectrum of mucin secreting glandular mixed type tumours. They comprise 0.1 – 0.2% of all lung tumours. They occur more frequently in young

Mechanical Stress Induced NOX2 Promotes Endothelial Dysfunction in Ventilator‐Induced Lung Injury: Potential Treatment with Quercetin

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Abnormal mechanical stretch induced by mechanical ventilation (MV) disrupts endothelial junctions via the NOX2/ROS/CaMKII/ERK1/2 axis both in human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) in vitro and in ventilator‐induced lung injury (VILI) in mice. Quercetin, an antioxidant predicted to bind to NOX2, can effectively prevent mechanical stretch‐induced ...

Advances in imaging chest tuberculosis: blurring of differences between children and adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This article reviews the ongoing role of imaging in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) and its complications. A modern imaging classification of TB, taking into account both adults and children and the blurring of differences in the presentation patterns,

CD103+ T Cells Eliminate Damaged Alveolar Epithelial Type II Cells Under Oxidative Stress to Prevent Lung Tumorigenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work unravels a novel function of CD103+ T cells in eradicating oxidative‐stressed somatic cells to prevent lung tumorigenesis and identifies specific CD103+ T cell‐decline as a key feature in the aged lung. This comprehensive study highlights the contribution of immuno‐dysregulation to the high incidence of aging‐associated lung cancers ...
