Report of the Horse Mackerel, Mediterranean Horse Mackerel and Blue Jack Mackerel (Trachurus trachurus, T. mediterreaneus and T. picturatus) Otolith Exchange 2015

open access: yes, 2015
The ICES Planning Group on Commercial Catch, Discards and Biological Sampling (PGCCDBS) identified the need of the Horse Mackerel, Mediterranean Horse Mackerel and Blue Jack Mackerel (Trachurus trachurus, T. mediterreaneus and T. picturatus) otolith exchange to take place in 2015. It was the forth exchange.

Age and growth of Trachurus picturatus (Bowdich, 1825) (Teleostei: Carangidae) from the Azores

open access: yes, 1990

Trends in abundance indices derived from commercial fisheries for priority marine stocks in the Azores

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 103, Issue 4, Page 815-827, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Large‐scale assessments of fish and shellfish populations may be valuable for identifying the impacts of fishing pressure on stocks, but they are rarely possible due to a lack of long‐term datasets. In this study, a two‐part mixed‐effect model for lognormal data was used to obtain historical abundance indices for 16 priority fish and shellfish

Comparing otolith shape descriptors for population structure inferences in a small pelagic fish, the European sardine Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 102, Issue 5, Page 1219-1236, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Otolith shape analysis has been one of the most used approaches to study population structure in the past decades. Currently, two sets of shape descriptors are used to perform otolith shape analysis, namely, Elliptic Fourier descriptor (EFd), which focuses on the overall otolith shape differences, and Discrete Wavelet descriptor (DWd), which ...

Spatiotemporal variability in the occurrence of juvenile Japanese jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus along coastal areas of the Kuroshio Current

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 30, Issue 5, Page 569-583, September 2021., 2021
Abstract To understand the population structure of the Japanese jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus in coastal areas adjacent to the Kuroshio Current (referred to as the “CAK”), we analyzed size composition and commercial landing data of juvenile fish in these areas for the period 2005–2015.

Thinking of Fish Population Discrimination: Population Average Phenotype vs. Population Phenotypes

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
The genetic polymorphism and phenotypic variation are key in ecology and evolution. The morphological variability of the contour of fish otoliths has been extensively used for the delimitation of stocks.

Reconstructing discards profiles of unreported catches

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2018
In Portugal it has been estimated that unreported catches represent one third of total catches. Herein, information on landings and total unreported catches (discards) by commercial métier were disaggregated into high taxonomic detail using published ...

Biometry, Distribution and Genetic Characterization of Blue Jack Mackerel Trachurus picturatus (Bowdich, 1825), a Rare Pelagic Fish Species in the Adriatic Sea

open access: yesDiversity, 2020
The blue jack mackerel Trachurus picturatus (Bowdich, 1825) specimens (N = 155) were collected during the MEDITS survey, done along the eastern side, precisely, of the Croatian fishing ground in July 2018.

Weight–length relations for 103 fish species from the southern Aegean Sea, Turkey [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2014
Using a traditional, commercial, crustacean bottom trawl net we collected fish samples from the southern Aegean Sea, from Dec 2009 to Nov 2010, at depths of 30–225 m.

By-catch species susceptibilities and potential for survival in Algarve (southern Portugal) deep-water crustacean trawl fishery

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2018
Bottom trawling for crustaceans in Portuguese coastal waters is an important fishery in terms of revenue, despite its negative impacts on deep-sea ecosystems.
