Study of ballast layer stiffness in railway tracks

open access: yesGrađevinar, 2016
In this paper, ballast layer stiffness in railway tracks is investigated. Test results show that the percentage of ballast contamination changes considerably across the ballast layer depth. For this reason, the ballast was divided during modelling into three layers and the stiffness of each layer was derived based on the pyramid model developed for ...

Energy harvesting from train vibrations

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper, linear mechanical oscillators are designed to harvest energy from train-induced vibrations. The harvested energy could be used, for example, to charge sensors mounted on the rail track for structural health monitoring.

Intelligent Acousto‐Electrical Metamaterials (IAM) for Sound Source Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Our proposed metamaterial concept enables sound source detection using a single material, in contrast to conventional arrays that require dozens or even hundreds of transducers. We show that the coupled acoustic–vibrational–electrical responses in piezoelectric metamaterials give rise to topology‐governed charge transport, producing distinct voltage ...

Railway track stiffness variation - consequences and countermeasures

open access: yes, 2005
The track stiffness experienced by a train will vary along the track. Sometimes the stiffness variation can be very large whitin short distances. These changes in track stiffness will cause variations in the train/track interaction forces, and force ...

Dynamic train-track interactions over track stiffness discontinuities in railway track transitions mitigated by resilient materials [PDF]

open access: yes
Railway track transitions, where abrupt changes between different track sections lead to differential settlement and increased maintenance costs, pose a significant challenge.

Mechanically Programmable DNA Hydrogel Microparticles for 3D Cellular Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
DNA hydrogel microparticles are designed to exhibit controllable viscoelasticity and stiffness across three orders of magnitude from 30Pa$30 \,\mathrm{Pa}$ to 6.5kPa$6.5 \,\mathrm{kPa}$. They are uptaken into fibroblast spheroids where they are actively remodeled by cellular forces depending on their mechanical properties.

Track behaviour: the importance of the sleeper to ballast interface

open access: yes, 2008
The aim of this research is to develop a fuller understanding of the mechanical behaviour of thesleeper/ballast interface, related in particular, to the forces applied by high speed tilting trains onlow radius curves.

Flexible Dielectric Acoustic Resonator Patch for Tissue Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A flexible dielectric acoustic resonator patch enables MHz‐range ultrasound generation through resonance amplification without using piezoelectric materials. Conformal integration on a curved substrate allows efficient acoustic delivery to tissue‐mimicking environments.

Dynamics responses of railway bridges influenced by flooded ballasted tracks subjected to high-speed trains

open access: yesTransportation Engineering
This study focuses on the dynamics of the train-track-bridge interaction system, specifically addressing the challenges posed by saturated ballasted tracks due to insufficient drainage during extreme flooding events.

Lattice‐Matched 2D Template Enables Efficient Cesium Tin Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Lattice‐matched 2D perovskite PEA2CsSn2I7 templates the out‐of‐plane growth of inorganic 3D γ‐CsSnI3 along the (110) plane, forming highly oriented 2D/3D tin halide perovskite heterostructures. With reduced trap states and mitigated δ‐phase impurities, the CsSnI3‐based solar cells achieve a power conversion efficiency of 15.27% and maintain stable ...
