Track stiffness considerations for high speed railway lines

open access: yes, 2009
This chapter discusses the importance of the vertical track stiffness as a means to guide high speed railway track bed design and inform decisions regarding track maintenance and renewal.

Hierarchical Multi‐Material Architectures With Gradient Design for Dynamic‐Range Flexible Tactile Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Hierarchical multi‐material TPMS lattices are engineered as flexible tactile sensors by combining soft and stiff elastomeric layers with a conformal conductive coating. The bilayer architecture delivers sensitivity at low pressures while maintaining a broad detectable range under large loads, enabling reliable pressure and vibration monitoring for ...

On the Use of Under-Sleeper Pads in Tracks with Varying Track Stiffness

open access: yes, 2009
The track stiffness experienced by a train will vary along the track. Sometimes the stiffness variation may be very large within a short distance. One example is when an unsupported sleeper is hanging in the rail. Track stiffness is then, locally at that

Morphology‐Driven Electromechanical Performance of Graphene‐Based Electrofluids for Emerging Soft Electronic Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Here, two types of electronic components are presented: a strain sensor and a stable resistor. Electrofluids properties are tuned to match these behaviors by selecting the type of filler. We show that the morphology of the filler together with its oxygen content are the key parameters to create electrical and mechanical networks with distinct responses.

A Study of the Effect of Global Track Stiffness and its Variations on Track Performance : Simulation and Measurement

open access: yes, 2009
This paper investigates the effect of vertical track stiffness, and its variations along the track, on track performance with focus on dynamic responses of track due to parametric excitations.

Galinstan Liquid Metal/Polyurethane Composite as a Multifunctional Stretchable Electrode and Piezoresistive Strain Sensor With Minimal Drift

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Liquid metal additives are processed in elastomer host resulting in highly conductive and stretchable composites. The material functions as a piezoresistive sensor with minimal drift, low stiffness, and enhanced operating range. The film can replace wires to charge a mobile phone at ∼350% strain and monitors bodily motion in real‐time via a portable ...
