Asynchrounous Motors in Electric Traction

EPE Journal, 2000
AbstractIn many applications the electric motors must possess a high overload capacity. That is particularly necessary in electric traction, in lifting gears and in various industrial applications.Initially either d.c. motors were employed with series excitation, able to assure high working flux value and to produce high torque, or d.c.

Verification of insulation tests for traction motors

Electrical Engineering in Japan, 1997
More than 30,000 thousand dc motors are used by the Japan Railway group companies alone as traction motors for railway vehicles. Insulation breakdown of armatures is one of the most important problems in traction motors. Therefore, various insulation tests are carried out for each motor in overhaul. The methods for insulation tests were determined more

Inverter-Fed Asynchronous Motors for Traction Systems

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1977
Publisher Summary Variable-frequency inverter-fed asynchronous motor constitutes, in the field of electric traction, an effective option to traditional d.c. motor. The success of this equipment is connected to the advantages the squirrel cage asynchronous motor may provide lower weight and small dimensions, higher power at high speed, less ...

Thermal analysis of traction motors

2014 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC), 2014
➢ Very challenging machine specifications require performance analysis across the entire operational envelope ➢ Software tools such as the ones talked about today can be used to quickly and accurately predict efficiency maps and thermal transient with different drive cycles ➢ This enables increased productivity and improved ...

New insulation system for traction motors

1985 EIC 17th Electrical/Electronics Insulation Conference, 1985
A new heat resistant impregnating resin has been developed for two kinds of traction motors: dc motor and variable-voltage, variable-frequency (VVVF) inverter-type induction motor. Motorette test of dc motor under more severe conditions than IEEE No. 304 indicates that the insulation system satisfies the thermal class 220°.

DC and AC traction motors

9th IET Professional Development Course on Electric Traction Systems, 2006
This paper describes the use of electrical machines as the prime mover in railway locomotives and vehicles. First, the loading of traction machines is examined from knowledge of vehicle movement dynamics within the traction duty cycle. Then the operation of the principal types of traction machine - DC, synchronous and induction (asynchronous) motors ...

VPI for class H traction-motors

1983 EIC 6th Electrical/Electronical Insulation Conference, 1983
Towards 1840, R. Davidson built a small car driven by an electromotor (Figure 1). Only three years later a six tons vehicle built by him reached a velocity of four miles per hour. The batteries allowed to cover a distance of 1½ miles.

Three-phase motor in railway traction

IEE Proceedings A Science, Measurement and Technology, 1992
In the 1890s, polyphase systems were developed for distribution of power over relatively long distances, but three-phase motors found only limited use in railway traction because the fixed frequency of supply restricted operating speeds to a few, inflexible rates of rotation. The first use of the three-phase traction motor was on systems which supplied

Experience with London Transport's traction motors

IEE Proceedings B Electric Power Applications, 1981
The paper is intended to discuss London Transport's experience with traction motors from the immediate postwar years up to the present time. New features introduced are evaluated and compared with previous arrangements as design philosophy has evolved in response to experience and changing requirements.

DC traction motor with slotless armature

IEE Proceedings B Electric Power Applications, 1985
The slotless armature concept is an attempt to overcome the problem of poor commutation in DC traction motors. A small (90 hp) motor has been fitted with such an armature and has undergone tests to investigate the properties of slotless armature motors in the areas of commutation, eddy-current loss and mechanical stress under electrical-fault ...
