Analyzing Effect of Repeated Reading on Oral Fluency and Narrative Production for Computer-Assisted Language Learning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Repeated reading (RR) helps learners, who have little to no experience with reading fluently to gain confidence, speed and process words automatically. The benefits of repeated readings include helping all learners with fact recall, aiding identification of learners' main ideas and vocabulary, increasing comprehension, leading to faster reading as well

Future-proofing Education: A Prototype for Simulating Oral Examinations Using Large Language Models [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
This study explores the impact of Large Language Models (LLMs) in higher education, focusing on an automated oral examination simulation using a prototype. The design considerations of the prototype are described, and the system is evaluated with a select group of educators and students. Technical and pedagogical observations are discussed.

Transfer Learning for Oral Cancer Detection using Microscopic Images [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Oral cancer has more than 83% survival rate if detected in its early stages, however, only 29% of cases are currently detected early. Deep learning techniques can detect patterns of oral cancer cells and can aid in its early detection. In this work, we present the first results of neural networks for oral cancer detection using microscopic images.

Oral Billiards [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We propose a physical model of speech to explain its precision and robustness. We begin by reducing the dynamics to the bare minimum of polygonal billiards. The symbolic stability of the billiard trajectories against variations in action and the oral cavity geometry forms the basis for precision and robustness in articulation.

A study of vowel nasalization using instantaneous spectra [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Nasalization of vowels is a phenomenon where oral and nasal tracts participate simultaneously for the production of speech. Acoustic coupling of oral and nasal tracts results in a complex production system, which is subjected to a continuous changes owing to glottal activity.
