Technology and Application of Multi‐Energy System: An Engineering Study in China

open access: yesEnergy Internet, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Multi‐energy system (MES) is crucial for the development of smart cities. This paper summarises the research progress and achievements from an engineering case study in China which aims at enhancing MES energy efficiency. Key theories and technologies were tested at an MES demonstration site in Hunan, China, using both software and hardware ...

Temperature constraints of terrestrial ecosystem respiration in global biomes

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecosystem respiration (Re) plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle, but is conventionally modelled with temperature response functions that do not adequately account for the limiting effects of high temperature on Re. Using Re data from the FLUXNET2015 network,

Ecological acclimation: A framework to integrate fast and slow responses to climate change

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecological responses to climate change occur across vastly different time‐scales, from minutes for physiological plasticity to decades or centuries for community turnover and evolutionary adaptation. Accurately predicting the range of ecosystem trajectories will require

Low but significant evolutionary potential for growth, phenology and reproduction traits in European beech

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Local survival of forest tree populations under climate change depends on existing genetic variation and their adaptability to changing environments. Responses to selection were studied in European beech (Fagus sylvatica) under field conditions.

Large‐scale importance of bark beetle outbreaks for standing deadwood and woodpeckers

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study shows for the first time that large‐scale long‐term dynamics of bark beetle infestations are beneficial for woodpeckers and positively influence their population numbers by providing deadwood resources. Abstract Resource pulses associated with forest disturbances can significantly influence biological communities, with interacting and ...

Carboxylate release as a nutrient‐acquisition strategy in mycorrhizal plant species in phosphorus‐impoverished environments

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Many mycorrhizal plant species very likely depended on root carboxylate release to acquire P at the P‐impoverished study sites. Arbuscular mycorrhizal species exhibited a less conservative nutrient‐utilisation strategy with higher leaf [P] than cluster‐rooted non‐mycorrhizal species and accessed more inorganic N.
