The interplay of dormancy and transfer in bacterial populations: Invasion, fixation and coexistence regimes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We investigate the interplay between two fundamental mechanisms of microbial population dynamics and evolution called dormancy and horizontal gene transfer. The corresponding traits come in many guises and are ubiquitous in microbial communities, affecting their dynamics in important ways.

Trait evolution in two-sex populations

open access: yes, 2015
We present an individual-based model of phenotypic trait evolution in two-sex populations, which includes semi-random mating of individuals of the opposite sex, natural death and intra-specific competition.

Knockout of the mitoribosome rescue factors Ict1 or Mtrfr is viable in zebrafish but not mice: compensatory mechanisms underlying each factor's loss

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mitochondria contain two mitoribosome rescue factors, ICT1 and MTRFR (C12orf65). ICT1 also functions as a mitoribosomal protein in mice and humans, and its loss is lethal. Although Mtrfr knockout mice could not be generated, knockout zebrafish lines for ict1 and mtrfr were established.

A glimpse into the future composition of marine phytoplankton communities

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2014
It is expected that climate change will have significant impacts on ecosystems. Most model projections agree that the ocean will experience stronger stratification and less nutrient supply from deep waters.

Polytraits : a database on biological traits of marine polychaetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The study of ecosystem functioning – the role which organisms play in an ecosystem – is becoming increasingly important in marine ecological research. The functional structure of a community can be represented by a set of functional traits assigned to ...

Understanding and Overcoming Immunotherapy Resistance in Skin Cancer: Mechanisms and Strategies

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This narrative review explores the mechanisms driving immunotherapy resistance in skin cancer, including tumor microenvironment factors, genetic mutations, and immune evasion strategies. It highlights potential strategies to overcome resistance, offering insights for improving therapeutic outcomes and guiding future research in personalized ...

Clinical Phenotyping of Long COVID Patients Evaluated in a Specialized Neuro‐COVID Clinic

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To report Long COVID characteristics and longitudinal courses of patients evaluated between 4/14/21–4/14/22 at the University of Pennsylvania Neurological COVID Clinic (PNCC), including clinical symptoms, neurological examination findings, and neurocognitive screening tests from a standardized PNCC neurological evaluation approach ...

The look-ahead effect of phenotypic mutations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The evolution of complex molecular traits such as disulphide bridges often requires multiple mutations. The intermediate steps in such evolutionary trajectories are likely to be selectively neutral or deleterious.

EEG Spectral Exponents and Visual Chirp Responses Mirror Anti‐Seizure Medication Load in Refractory Focal Epilepsy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Quantitative markers of cortical excitability may help identify responders to anti‐seizure medications (ASMs). We studied the relationship between ASM load and two electroencephalography (EEG) markers of cortical excitability in people with refractory epilepsy. Methods We included individuals with refractory focal epilepsy undergoing
