The transfer function of the cochlea
Quarterly Reviews of Biophysics, 1978A sinusoidal signal is generally considered the simplest auditory signal. It is, indeed, a simple signal. However, it does not follow that a complex analysing device, like the cochlea, should treat a simple signal in a simple way. Indeed, a simple signal may appear to be complex when viewed from the standpoint of the device considered.

Many biological processes, especially those involving the functioning of the central nervous system, behave as self-regulatory devices or servomechanisms [34,44]. The pupil reflex to light is an example of such a process. This paper approaches the problem of a quantitative study of applying servoanalytic concepts and techniques [4, 11].
