Controlled evolution of an RNA enzyme [PDF]

open access: yes
It is generally thought that prior to the origin of protein synthesis, life on earth was based on self-replicating RNA molecules. This idea has become especially popular recently due to the discovery of catalytic RNA (ribozymes).

Modeling hepatic fibrosis in TP53 knockout iPSC‐derived human liver organoids

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study developed iPSC‐derived human liver organoids with TP53 gene knockout to model human liver fibrosis. These organoids showed elevated myofibroblast activation, early disease markers, and advanced fibrotic hallmarks. The use of profibrotic differentiation medium further amplified the fibrotic signature seen in the organoids.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the coconut black-headed caterpillar Opisina arenosella (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea: Xyloryctidae)

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2019
In the present study, we determined the complete mitogenome of Opisina arenosella, the first for the family Xyloryctidae. This mitochondrial genome contains 15,389 bp, with an A + T content of 80.5% and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer ...

Complete chloroplast genome sequence of Chrysosplenium ramosum and Chrysosplenium alternifolium (Saxifragaceae)

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2020
The complete chloroplast genome of Chrysosplenium ramosum Maxim. and Chrysosplenium alternifolium L. were reported in this study. The chloroplast genomes were 153,460 bp for C. ramosum and 152,619 bp for C. alternifolium.

PYCR1 inhibition in bone marrow stromal cells enhances bortezomib sensitivity in multiple myeloma cells by altering their metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigated how PYCR1 inhibition in bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) indirectly affects multiple myeloma (MM) cell metabolism and viability. Culturing MM cells in conditioned medium from PYCR1‐silenced BMSCs impaired oxidative phosphorylation and increased sensitivity to bortezomib.

Inhibition of CDK9 enhances AML cell death induced by combined venetoclax and azacitidine

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The CDK9 inhibitor AZD4573 downregulates c‐MYC and MCL‐1 to induce death of cytarabine (AraC)‐resistant AML cells. This enhances VEN + AZA‐induced cell death significantly more than any combination of two of the three drugs in AraC‐resistant AML cells.

Analysis of tRNA halves (tsRNAs) in serum from cattle challenged with bovine viral diarrhea virus

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology
Acute infections of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) lead to a range of clinical presentations. Laboratory tests for detection depend on collection of samples during a short viremia. Acutely infected animals remain largely undiagnosed.

A Unifying Scenario on the Origin and Evolution of Cellular and Viral Domains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The cellular theory on the nature of life has been one of the first major advancements in biology. Viruses, however, are the most abundant life forms, and their exclusion from mainstream biology and the Tree of Life (TOL) is a major paradox in biology ...

Retrograde trafficking of Argonaute 2 acts as a rate-limiting step for de novo miRNP formation on endoplasmic reticulum–attached polysomes in mammalian cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
microRNAs are short regulatory RNAs in metazoan cells. Regulation of miRNA activity and abundance is evident in human cells where availability of target messages can influence miRNA biogenesis by augmenting the Dicer1-dependent processing of precursors ...
