Treatment of tRNA fMet with hydroxylamine caused specific modification of cytosine residues among a number of constituent nucleobases and only three out of the 26 cytosine residues in the tRNA were modified. The disappearance of tRNA during the maturation of rabbit reticulocytes under the stress of phenylhydrazine-induced hemolysis was studied. On the origin of the transfer RNA molecule

Data and arguments are given in favour of the hypothesis that the primitive tRNA molecule may have originated from a direct duplication event involving one of the two halves of the tRNA molecule. It seems that a molecule capable of assuming a hairpin structure was involved as a precursor in this duplication.

When it was observed that soluble RNA (sRNA) played a vital role in protein synthesis, this low-molecular-weight species of RNA attracted much attention. The typical sRNA molecule, with a molecular weight of about 25,000 and a sedimentation constant of 4S, is a polynucleotide chain containing about 80 nucleotides.

Studies on transfer RNA and transfer RNA genes in Drosophila melanogaster

In the present study Drosophila melanogaster was used to define the organization and expression of tRNA genes. The three major Drosophila valine tRNAs were isolated and purified by standard chromatographic techniques. Nucleoside analysis indicated that of these tRNAs only tRNA₄Val contained inosine.
