Incorporating nanosized silver into titanium for antimicrobial materials exploits the metastable miscibility gap between silver and titanium. Silver nanoparticles are synthesized via pulsed laser ablation in liquid. Silver addition refines the microstructure, increases hardness by 30%, and reduces Staphylococcus capitis microbial adhesion by 70%, with ...

An electronic system is presented consisting of a silver thin‐film electrode on a polyimide substrate working both as a heating element and a resistive temperature sensor, generating millisecond heat pulses with very fast heating and cooling rates and a flat peak temperature with a tunable duration.

Shape dynamics of growing cell walls [PDF]
We introduce a general theoretical framework to study the shape dynamics of actively growing and remodeling surfaces. Using this framework we develop a physical model for growing bacterial cell walls and study the interplay of cell shape with the dynamics of growth and constriction.

Horizontal gene transfer regulation in bacteria as a "spandrel" of DNA repair mechanisms.
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is recognized as the major force for bacterial genome evolution. Yet, numerous questions remain about the transferred genes, their function, quantity and frequency.

Pull in and Push Out: Mechanisms of Horizontal Gene Transfer in Bacteria
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) plays an important role in bacterial evolution. It is well accepted that DNA is pulled/pushed into recipient cells by conserved membrane-associated DNA transport systems, which allow the entry of only single-stranded DNA ...

Bacterial gene transfer by natural genetic transformation in the environment.
Natural genetic transformation is the active uptake of free DNA by bacterial cells and the heritable incorporation of its genetic information. Since the famous discovery of transformation in Streptococcus pneumoniae by Griffith in 1928 and the ...

Dynamics of a bacterial flagellum under reverse rotation [PDF]
To initiate tumbling of an E. coli, one of the helical flagella reverses its sense of rotation. It then transforms from its normal form first to the transient semicoiled state and subsequently to the curly-I state. The dynamics of polymorphism is effectively modeled by describing flagellar elasticity through an extended Kirchhoff free energy.
