Ultra‐Effective Light‐Activated Antibacterial Activity via Carboxyl Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots and Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carboxyl‐functionalized graphene quantum dots (cGQDs) exhibit high singlet oxygen quantum yield due to strong spin–orbit coupling. cGQDs achieve minimum bactericidal concentration of only 0.4 µg mL−1 against S. aureus under low‐intensity illumination.

M5: A Whole Genome Bacterial Encoder at Single Nucleotide Resolution [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
A linear attention mechanism is described to extend the context length of an encoder only transformer, called M5 in this report, to a multi-million single nucleotide resolution foundation model pretrained on bacterial whole genomes. The linear attention mechanism used approximates a full quadratic attention mechanism tightly and has a simple and ...

Multi‐Scaled Cellulosic Nanonetworks from Tunicates

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Microbial and plant nanonetworks of cellulose have enabled a wide range of high‐performance yet sustainable materials. Herein, a third class of cellulosic nanonetworks is showcased by exploiting the only animal tissue‐producing cellulose nanofibers, i.e., ascidians. An ultrastructure including spherical cells and a microvasculature with diameters of 50–

A Comparison of Bacterial Colonies Count from Petri Dishes Utilizing Hough Transform and Traditional Manual Counting [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Bacterial colony enumeration is an essential stage in microbiological research, allowing susceptibility to antibiotics assessment, monitoring of the environment, and clinical diagnostics. Traditional manual counting methods are costly and susceptible to human mistakes, prompting the creation of automated detection systems.

Biofilm Control by Active Topography with Mucin Coating

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a new antifouling strategy based on a bioinspired design. Mucin coating enhances biofilm control by active topography with beating micron‐sized pillars. Besides the mechanical force of beating pillars, the antibiofilm activities also involve biological factors since mucin coating inhibits swarming motility and c‐di‐GMP synthesis in ...
