Haemoglobin, oxygen carriers and perioperative organ perfusion [PDF]
Under normal conditions, only 20-30% of the delivered oxygen is metabolised. In normovolaemic anaemia, the organism reacts with increases in cardiac output and oxygen extraction.

ABSTRACT Background Central venous catheters (CVCs) are essential in pediatric hematology‐oncology, for the administration of chemotherapy and supportive therapy. Thrombocytopenia increases the risk of bleeding and current guidelines recommend prophylactic platelet transfusions below 40–50 × 109/L, though evidence is limited and transfusions entail ...

Impact of intraoperative lung-protective interventions in patients undergoing lung cancer surgery [PDF]
INTRODUCTION: In lung cancer surgery, large tidal volume and elevated inspiratory pressure are known risk factors of acute lung (ALI). Mechanical ventilation with low tidal volume has been shown to attenuate lung injuries in critically ill patients.

Abstract Background Annually millions of platelet concentrate (PC) are transfused worldwide. The decision regarding PC transfusion is often complex; therefore, the implementation of a hospital programme designed to streamline and facilitate the decision‐making process is beneficial. Such a programme helps standardise transfusion practices, ensures that

Endothelial thrombomodulin—Its role in trauma‐induced coagulopathy
Abstract Background Trauma‐induced coagulopathy (TIC) describes a complex set of coagulation changes affecting severely injured patients. The thrombomodulin‐protein C axis is central to the evolution of TIC. Soluble thrombomodulin (sTM) levels are elevated after injury and predict poor clinical outcomes.

Abstract Introduction Recent studies have linked trauma patient outcomes to the plasma donor's sex, with premenopausal females associated with improved survival and lower organ failure. Currently, green‐colored plasma (due to oral contraceptive use) is removed from the donor pool. We set out to evaluate the hemostatic potential of green plasma.
