Hepatitis E Virus Infection in Swiss Transplant Recipients: Seroprevalence, Incidence, and the Role of Transfused Blood Products

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, EarlyView.
HEV epidemiology in solid organ (SOT) and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (allo‐HSCT) transplant recipients in Switzerland between 2010 and 2017. HEV RNA incidence is more than 20‐fold higher in the transplant cohort than in Swiss blood donors. Although most infections were likely of dietary origin, one transfusion‐transmitted HEV case was detected.

Motives and barriers to blood donation among adults aged over 50 years: A qualitative analysis

open access: yesTransfusion Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Ageing populations will increase demand for blood‐products and donors who supply them. While blood collection agencies (BCAs) typically target younger people to expand supply, recruiting donors aged 50+ is also a potential solution. However, few studies focus exclusively on this group.

Alternative strategies to promote voluntary blood donation in secondary schools in Malawi: Enhancing participation and impact—Malawi BLOODSAFE program

open access: yesTransfusion Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Objective Adequate blood supply remains a challenge in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA). Malawi has a 13% shortfall in required blood supplies. Innovative recruitment and retention strategies are crucial to ensuring a sufficient number of donors and blood supply.

High prevalence and poor linkage to care of transfusion-transmitted infections among blood donors in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Viral Hepatitis, 2019
Blood transfusion is one of the most commonly relied upon therapies in sub‐Saharan Africa. Existing safeguards recommended include systematic screening for transfusion‐transmitted infections and restricted voluntary nonremunerated blood donor selection ...

The Continuing Risk of Transfusion-Transmitted Infections

New England Journal of Medicine, 2006
An emerging agent can threaten the safety of the blood supply. Drs. Morris Blajchman and Eleftherios Vamvakas write that the risk of transfusion-transmitted infection is not static, as new agents continue to emerge and old ones change their properties and epidemiologic patterns.

Prevention of transfusion-transmitted infections

Blood, 2019
AbstractSince the 1970s, introduction of serological assays targeting virus-specific antibodies and antigens has been effective in identifying blood donations infected with the classic transfusion-transmitted infectious agents (TTIs; hepatitis B virus [HBV], HIV, human T-cell lymphotropic virus types I and II, hepatitis C virus [HCV]).

Notification of transfusion transmitted infection

Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, 2008
The National Blood Policy of India, 2002, advocates the disclosure of results of transfusion transmitted infections (TTI) to blood donors. However, in the absence of well-defined notification processes, and in order to avoid serious consequences resulting from unguided disclosure, blood bank personnel discard blood that is TTI-positive.

Transfusion-Transmitted Retrovirus Infection

Hematology/Oncology Clinics of North America, 1995
This article reviews the history, classification, and disease associations of the known human retroviruses and outlines their profound effects on the practice of transfusion medicine. The immunodeficiency viruses, HIV-1 and HIV-2, produce a cytolytic effect on infected lymphocytes, and are the causative agents of AIDS.

Transfusion-Transmitted Bacterial Infection

Hematology/Oncology Clinics of North America, 1995
Transfusion-transmitted bacterial infection is a persistent but often underemphasized problem facing transfusion medicine today. The present status of bacterial contamination of red cells, platelet products and plasma, frequency of contamination, and types of organisms implicated is reviewed.
